Obituary of Jeremy (Jerry) Mark Anthony Anglin
Jeremy (Jerry) Mark Anthony Anglin, 74, of Waterloo, Ontario, passed away peacefully in Waterloo at 4:55 am on June 21st, 2018, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Toronto to Marguerite and Jack Anglin, Jerry grew up in Toronto with his six siblings and their many close friends; he went to school at De La Salle College and the University of Toronto. He then went to Cambridge, Massachusetts to study and teach psychology at Harvard University.
While a PhD student at Harvard, Jerry met Margaret Morse, who was working in the Psychology Department. They got married in Boston in 1975 and in 1976 they moved to Waterloo, where they had two daughters, Emily and Eleanor. Jerry worked as a professor at the University of Waterloo for 33 years. He was recognized for his contributions to our understanding of how children acquire vocabulary words and published four books on this subject. His scientific interest in this area was an extension of his love of children.
Jerry loved music (especially Elvis, Emmy Lou Harris, and the Beatles) golf, reading, movies, and cats. He also adored his wife, Margaret, and told anyone he spoke to about her that she was beautiful, smart, and a great cook and artist.
Jerry was noted by all who know him as an exceptionally gentle, kind, and considerate person who embodied the golden rule, a tenet he spoke of as a personal guiding principle. His witty, playful sense of humour remained with him until his final days. The last words he spoke were “thank you,” a fitting representation of his completely sincere, humble and appreciative nature. He left all those who knew him with a deeper belief in the goodness of people.
Jerry is survived by his daughters Eleanor and Emily, his wife Margaret, his son-in-law Matthew, and daughter-in-law Andrea, as well as by his siblings, Tim, Niall, Brian, Judy, Lise and Dan. He was preceded by his dear parents, Marguerite Anglin, an artist, and Jack Anglin, a lawyer.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Jeremy with his family during memorial visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 2pm-4pm.
Condolences for the family and in lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Kitchener Waterloo Humane Society which may be arranged through the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
Special thanks go to the wonderful staff and medical team at University Gates Long Term Care, who reflected Jerry’s kindness and showed him so much careful attention and love
