Dear Carol and family,
We were saddened to read of Ric’s passing. As a CHA family, and former members of Emmanuel Church, we shared several common family ties.
Recently, Gord and I returned from Australia, and in catching up with email, we came upon Ric’s obituary.
Rick always had a role, whether it be as a Parkland leader for CHA, or another volunteer position at Emmanuel.
Carol, your sons and their families will carry on Ric’s values and determined nature. In that way, his legacy will continue to live on and thrive.
Thinking of you all,
Gord and Deb Willmot and family

Dear Carol, Neal, Graham, Glen and family.
Ric and I attended J.F. Carmichael public school and were the only two boys in our age group to go through the acceleration program along with seven girls. By the sixth grade we were separated because of the opening of Forest Hill public school which he then began attending. We attended different high schools.
Because either Ric was living, studying or working out of town or I was working out of town, Ric and I were not in personal contact for years. Interestingly I did feel a connection to him through his brother Glen with whom I would interact because of the music scene.
Ric did reach out to me in the mid 90s and so I got to meet his wife Carol and his sons Neal and Graham. We were able to socialize a little and I always felt good about those few times that we were able to get together.
I will always have a soft spot for Ric because, back in the second grade and without knowing it, he taught me the correct pronunciation of the word giant and so saved me a lot of embarrassment in reading class.
Please accept my most sincere condolences.

Lynette and I were so sorry to hear about Ric’s passing and offer you all our deepest sympathy. As a result of guidance I received from Ric during my graduate studies, I have much to be thankful for. I am always reminded of a conversation I had with him at the end of my Master’s program. I was contemplating my future and among the options open to me was continued study at UWaterloo. I recall asking him directly, “What do I have to do to get your job?” Unshaken and smiling, he replied that I’d have to complete a Ph.D. first. With that I told him to “sign me up” and we set out on a path that would be life altering for me. With his help, I received the Ph.D. plus the university faculty position I was seeking. Besides the education in hydrology and critical thinking, I also took away a sense of empathy and a respect for others that I carry with me today. While Ric struggled physically, these limitations were far outpaced by his intellectual strength and his desire to continue working with us, his students. We spoke many times about these challenges and how simple it would be for him step back to the comforts of home. Luckily for me, he chose to offer his strength and rose to challenges that faced him. While I’m thankful for his efforts, I continue to think back on how difficult it was for you and your family. In many ways, it was your strength and support that was transferred, through him, to all of us. For this, my family and I are forever grateful.

Our thoughts are with Carol, Neal and Graham. For all of us, Ric’s passing came as a shock and he’ll be missed in the hydrological community. During our time together at the University of Waterloo, we collaborated on several projects and shared in advising a number of outstanding students. Ric was a great networker and he an uncanny ability to turn a conversation into funding opportunity. Two projects stand out: one to model floods on the Columbia River in BC and the other was participation in the NASA led Boreal Forest Ecosystem study (BOREAS) in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. During this time, his work with Todd Neff, John Donald and Frank Seglenieks added some of the most important and lasting components to the WATFLOOD model that is now being used throughout Canada. For that I will be forever grateful.

Carol, Graham and Niel,
I was totally shocked and taken a back when I first heard about Ric's passing. It truly feels like I've lost a relative. Ric is entirely responsible for my career: he believed in me right from second year undergrad when I was a keener sitting in the front row of his fluids class. He invited me to be a URA in his lab that summer, and well, the rest is history. It was because of Ric that Nick Kouwen got to know me/hired me, and because of them both of them that I fell in love with Hydrology. I met people in Ric's lab, working for Ric, who gave me my foundation in hydrology like Frank, Ted, and Ken. For this, I will forever be indebted to Ric. He made me one of his (hydrology) family, and it was always nice to catch up at conferences with him. I am so very sorry for your loss, and though nothing but time can help to heal your sorrow, perhaps knowing what a difference Ric made on those he taught, connected with and inspired may help light the way. All of us in the hydrology community will remember Ric as one of it's founding fathers in Canada.

My sincere condolences for all the family members. Since I started my work at the University in 1997, Ric has been a role model for me because of his kindness, perseverance, strength, and dedication. Despite the difficulties of life and the academic challenges, he always kept a hopeful and helpful attitude and even more admirable with a touch of humor. I will definitely miss him, my prayers for all the family members in this difficult time. Giovanni

Dear Carol, Neal, Graham, Melissa, and Michelle,
I am so pleased to have known Ric, and to see what a wonderful legacy he built through his family and at the University of Waterloo.
You have a beautiful family, one rooted in kindness and mutual respect. Leslie and I often comment what a terrific job you all do of supporting one another, and of being a model to the rest of us. This is a powerful and rare thing Ric helped to build, a gift that lives on through the new generations you are now raising.
Leslie and I will be thinking of you all in the coming days, weeks, and months. You are in our prayers.

Dear Carol, Neal and Melissa, Graham and Michelle and Brendan,
Ric was always an inspiration and an analytical thinker who had a deep understanding of humanity. I will always remember him trying to figure out the odds of winning a game of Clue (and losing hopelessly) or analyzing the chime on a kayak to decide whether it suited the waters or not! It was especially fun having a day of ice cream (after a full breakfast) while leaving a little space for supper. Remember the sound of the trucks on the new bridge at Cambridge the summer that Ric had a conference in Fredericton? There are so many memories and I know he appreciated and loved you all so very much. We will miss him and know that he lives on in your memories as well as the legacy of family that he provided for you all.
Love, Myra
