This is late but I actually just found out about this sad news. I will always be grateful for his kindness where he and Betsy allowed me to stay at their residence when I came back after the summer holidays, before I moved in to the dorm with the help of some good friends. So sad I never got to return to Canada to see them earlier.

Ron Eydt was a huge part of my life and my families life and it is hard (really impossible) to convey how much he and Betsy mean to me in a short paragraph. But of course I will try. I first met Ron when I became a Don in 1975. Betsy came into my life shortly after this as a newlywed! As with many of you, my whole career at Waterloo was intwined with the Village and I stayed as Tutor of Minota Hagey when doing my PhD. Ron and Betsy were fixtures in my life during these ten years. I house sit, dog sat (Letty and Rory) and just hung out with Ron and Betsy when the occasion suited. Ron introduced me to martini's and I introduced him to Yorkshire pudding. Ron and Betsy are the God Parents for our daughter Annie - chosen because I knew that they lived the values that I wanted my daughter to have. Ron was bigger than life. He lead by example and truly cared - about villagers, about his Dons, and above all else about Betsy. I will miss "Ronald Dearheart" - but have a lot of pictures and memories of him that will stay with me forever - and bring a smile to my face. Love to Betsy. Linda

Both Gayle and Kim had the privilege of being students who "majored in residence" in the 70s and became Ron's Dons after that (Gayle - 76/77 and 77/78 and Kim 80/81). We met there and have been together ever since, attending several Ron's Don's reunions and loving them. We both agree that the absolute HIGHLIGHT of ever year was the annual Warden's Address. Ron's joie de vivre taught us so much about how you could combine a little academia and good judgement with a LOT of fun! His hilarious stories and great advice during those addresses, delivered with his trademark staccato speaking style, was always SO appreciated and will never be forgotten. We are SO glad that he was a part of our lives even for just those years.

It is with a heavy heart that I learned of Ron's passing today. While a UW Village resident, biology course student, don and orientation chairman in the 1980's, I openly share my fondness for his unbridled devotion to ensuring fairness for undergraduates, graduates and alumni alike. We spent much valued time together over the five years of my stay on campus.
Ron's wisdom, gentleness, forgiveness and counsel have been my guide posts through life - as I am sure it is for countless others spread across the globe.
To Ron - I raise a glass of the finest sherry.
To Betsy - thank you for sharing your lives with us all, and may Ron rest in peace.

Betsy:
It was lovely to see you on Saturday, notwithstanding the circumstances
I started to write memories and drew a blank
It was an honor and truly special to be one of Ron's Dons- it helped me grow up significantly and be the person I am today
Ron and his team of tutors provided sage advise and demonstrated leadership to all of us
we helped made a difference is other peoples lives, some more than others and we had fun doing it- the Don position is different than don equivalents at other schools
nowhere but Waterloo could that have happened and it was truly because of Ron
all you have to do is return to Ron's 80th birthday celebration and see how many came and from how far-it was special and a fabulous opportunity to reconnect with Ron and yourself and other leaders that came out of what most of us consider "Ron's Don program"
He was a special man and he helped create a lifelong network of friends and associates
He became even more special when you came into his life and brought an extra sense of family
Our thoughts and prayers remain with you and yours

This marks the end of the Golden Era. As a former Village resident and Don, Ron played an influential role during my 4 years at Waterloo. For me, University was all about Village life, and Ron was our fearless leader. Thank you for all that you did for so many of us! We’ve lost a great one! My thoughts and prayers are with Betsy.

In the 1970s, Ron came to UNB's Muskeg Research Institute where I was working to spend some time with his former McMaster University botany professor, Dr. N.W. Radforth. He spent a lot of time with our boss but he also got to know the rest of the staff, graduate students and their families. We liked him very much! He went back to Waterloo for a while and then returned to conclude his visit with us. He told us that during the first part of his time in New Brunswick he had made several decisions: to take on the role he was being offered at Waterloo; to get married; with Betsy who would become his wife they would own and breed Bearded Collies; and he bought a new car that we all had a chance to ride in. All of the decisions he made then have served him, his family, his University, his Church and his community well! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time.

I first got to know Ron Eydt in 1969 and became- I suspect- the youngest don he had ever selected for the Student Village. He took a chance on me and in the three years I donned, I grew in wisdom and maturity under his sage and hearty tutelage. A true Renaissance Man - Ron enjoyed life and had one of the most brilliant and incisive minds it has been my privilege to encounter. We stayed friends for more than 40 years and I was privileged to know this larger than life human. I last saw Ron when Al Crawford and I took him to lunch a few months ago . After all this time he was still the bon vivant and possessed the ready wit and wisdom which has endeared him to so many persons. Iconic is a word which is overused but Ron was an icon. Mere bricks and mortar which perpetuate his name at the University of Waterloo do him no justice for they can never capture his spirit. Ron Eydt, you will be truly missed. But you will always live on in a very special part of my heart and in the hearts of those thousand of lives you have touched on this earth. Till we meet again.. God bless and keep you- as I am sure He will.

Our most sincere condolences Betsy to you & the family!
Oh so sad to hear of the passing of Ron!
Many many heartfelt thoughts come to mind as I think about celebrating his life. He touched, mentored, influenced and shaped so many people. I was of great Fortune to have been one of those people ... one of Ron's Don's! His support, encouragement & mentoring through the founding & fledgling years of the Village Residences Benefit Semi-Formal Charity event set the foundation for an incredible legacy of U of W Village Residence support for the K-W community for many many years.
Ron you will be sorely missed but never forgotten!
I look forward to sharing conversation and a single malt with you when we meet again! Rest in peace my friend.

My sincerest condolences to Betsy, the family and friends.
I have very fond memories of the Village and of Ron. My first encounter was at a Village 1 Frosh orientation in 1971. I don't recall all that Ron said about Village and University life before me. However, what really stuck was is long, meandering story about freezing water and then boiling water and marking these events on a measuring device..... and then summing up by saying, "... and so, you have graduated a thermometer." The story fit right into his address to us and it made my first encounter unforgettable.
As a Don, first in North 6 and then in East C, I found Ron supportive. He was the essence of the Village.
He will be missed.

Ron was a wonderful model of a caring, bright, engaged, thoughtful and loving gentleman. I had the pleasure of being a Don in 74-75 and 75-76. I learned so much about how to lead, support and collaborate with others from Ron. In fact, when asked, I say that I majored in Residence and minored in Earth Science. Most of the skills I apply in my work today were learned directly from Ron or indirectly from observing him.
Having had the opportunity to attend almost all of the Don's reunions (at least the ones I was aware of) since I left U. of W. in 1977, it was wonderful to see the impact he had on the Dons during his time as Warden as well as on those who only knew him by reputation.
And the love he had for Betsy was, once again, a model to aspire to.
Ron, you will be missed. And Betsy, my heart and those of the other Dons I had the pleasure of serving with go out to you in this time of your loss.
Love always . . .

I first met Ron when I was one of the "urchins" that lived down the street from his brother Bob. Flash forward 15 years, when I was on Village council and Orientation, Ron was always available with advice, guidance and mentorship. "Never let school interfere with your education".
A couple years later, when I was one of Ron's Dons I met the woman I would share the rest of my life with - who was also a Don. His impact on my life has been subtle and profound. Yet my story is not unique, I am just one of the many people that came under his influence.
A gentle and wise man, a true community builder, an inspiration and role model. What a wonderful life!

Ron, you were larger than life. So much more then most of us us could ever hope to be. You were a quiet and well respected leader who influenced and shaped so many. One of your legacies will always be your Village Dons. Dons you have passed your mentoring and leadership skills onto, not only on a personal level, but to all those people each of your Dons comes in contact with. Thank you for the privilege, honour and opportunity to be a Ron’s Don. You will always be remembered my friend and never forgotten. Peace be with you.

The weekend event was promoted as a University of Waterloo Student Villages Don Reunion, but really was a Celebration of Ron and a gratitude party by his dons better known as Ron's Dons. My deepest sympathy to Betsy and family in the loss of Ron. I had the pleasure of working with him as a Don in the University of Waterloo residences in the early 80's. He was a wonderful person and a superb mentor. I was happy to have attended the most recent Don's Reunion in 2012 to celebrate his 80th birthday. His speech was typical "Dr. Eydt" - filled with musings and stories of his life at UW. He will be greatly missed.
