Obituary of Walter Herbert Boehmer

A gentleman and a gentle man.  Walter passed away quietly at The Village at University Gates, Waterloo on Saturday, November 3, 2018.  He had a struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and a blood disorder for many years but soldiered on through it all.

Beloved husband of Jean (nee Keeling) for 53 years.  Loyal father to sons Jay (Elaine Nakamura) and Dave Boehmer.  Cherished grandpa of Adam and Sarah Boehmer.  Remembered by his nieces Joan Harkness (Amir) of B.C., Jeni Keeling and Jill Keeling.  Predeceased by his parents Delphine and Herbert Boehmer, sister Marjorie Harkness and Ron and Pat Keeling.

Following graduation from KCI, Walter attended Euler Business College prior to joining the Boehmer family business established in 1895. He was an integral part of the business for 44 years and in his many positions helped Boehmers develop into one of this area’s most respected businesses.

Service clubs drew Walter into community and for many years he served with YMCA, Pan Politae, Delta Phalanx, Twin Cities Kiwanis (Mel Osbourne Fellow) and was a long-standing member of the Conestoga Sailing Club.  Walter was particularly pleased to be a part of the initial fundraising for the Centre in the Square which opened in 1980.  Walter was a lifelong active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and in 2011 was granted status of Elder Emeritus. Jean and Walter travelled extensively, including ski trips with family and friends, always returning with a great appetite for more.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Walter with his family during memorial visitation at The Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Friday, November 9, 2018 from 1 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. with the Celebration of Life to follow in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m., Rev. Greg Smith officiating. A reception will be held in the Fireside Reception Room immediately following the service.
