Obituary of Reginald Arthur Haney

QC, BA, LLB, MA, LLM, LLD

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Reg Haney at Innisfree House in Kitchener on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Reg was born on March 20, 1930 in Hanover, Ontario.  His father, William A. Haney died in 1932 so Reg and his older brother Donald were raised by their mother, Clara Hazel Haney (nee Buck) with help from the extended family and the small town values of Hanover.  Reg attended Hanover High School before going on to Waterloo College for a BA in history.

He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1955.  Reg joined the law practice of McGibbon & Harper in Waterloo in 1955.  He served as assistant Crown Attorney on a part-time basis from 1955 until 1968, and was named Queen's Council in 1967.  With expertise in administrative law and education law, Reg served as general counsel to Wilfrid Laurier University, Conestoga College, and the University of Waterloo and its affiliated institutions.  In 2007, Reg received the degree Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from UW for his long and distinguished service.  He was a founding member and past president of the Canadian Association of University Solicitors and a past president of the Waterloo Law Association.  While Reg had a long and distinguished career in the field of law, retiring from his firm Haney, Haney & Kendall in 2012, he pursued a concurrent career in education.  He earned an MA (WLU 1971) and an LLM (York).  While continuing a full-time law practice, Reg joined the teaching faculty at Wilfrid Laurier and taught for 35 years in the School of Business & Economics and served as Director of the MBA program. He also offered various courses in law at the University of Waterloo.

Reg was a lifelong hockey player and, as a founding member of the KW Oldtimers Hockey Association, contributed much to the organization and structure of the league.  He was also an avid golfer who will be missed greatly by his dear friends and golf pals at Leisure Lake Village in Florida.

Reg was a wonderful, caring, kind and generous husband, father, grandparent, uncle, and friend.  He will be joyfully remembered and sorely missed by his family and friends.  Reg was predeceased by his parents, Art and Hazel Haney, and his brother Don Haney.  He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Elaine (Thaler), daughter Mary Anne (Sandy McIntyre), and sons James (Erika), Peter (Elizabeth Sproule), and John (Patty Schotsch).  Reg was much loved by his grandchildren Catherine McIntyre (Darryl Murphy), Alexandra McIntyre, Madeline and Mark Haney, Thomas, Simon, and Charlotte Haney, and his great-granddaughter Vivian.

Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Monday, November 12, 2018 from 6-9 p.m.  A memorial service will be held at Parkminster United Church, 275 Erb St. E., Waterloo on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. with a reception following in the church hall.

Donations in Reg's memory may be made to KidsAbility or YMCA’s of Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo by contacting the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.

Reg's family would like to thank the staff of Innisfree House for the wonderful care Reg received in his final days.
