Dear Beth Ann and family,
I am deeply saddened today to have belatedly learned of Victor's passing. At the same time I am profoundly inspired when I think about the innumerable ways in which Victor's humanity, musicianship, and dedication to music pedagogy have impacted so many of us. The last time I saw Victor was when he was last in Ottawa serving as an adjudicator for the Kiwanis Festival. He was approaching 80 years of age at the time, yet his passion for his craft, and for supporting and encouraging young musicians, was clearly undiminished. The world is diminished without Victor's sparkle in it, but the light of his legacy will live on in those he loved, taught and inspired.
With heartfelt condolences to the entire family,
J.

Dear Beth Ann (and Victor's family),
I'm so sorry to hear this sad news. Victor was inspiring and so intensely excited about life and music. I'll never forget the breathless experience of trying to keep up with him in a voice lesson, or the kindness he showed by giving me many free lessons in exchange for watering a few plants.
I'll miss him and keep telling stories about him to the people who weren't lucky enough to know him.
Love,
Michael

To Beth Ann and all of Victors family and friends,
My heart goes out to you. With you, I mourn the loss of Victor, a truly inspirational and great man that touched and bettered the lives of so many. I too was exceptionally blessed to have had Victor as my teacher in the most crucial and fundamental stage of my training. His Brilliant and dynamic teaching moulded the foundation of my singing and that of so many others. But there was more to it than his knowledge. There was a fire in his eyes, a passion to change the world for the better though music. The fond memories are too many to share, but I will never ever forget the feeling of coming out of a lesson, smiling from ear to ear, inspired, with a hunger to do more. He trusted me to sing the evangelist in the Bach passions under his Baton at a very young age and He and Beth Ann selflessly guided every step of the Journey to achieve this, and many other goals.
I will be forever grateful Victor.
ruht wohl, ruht wohl.

It is very sad news to hear of Victor's passing. My sincere sympathy to BethAnn, her family and Victor's family.
I was fortunate to have been a voice student of Victor at WLU, (Honours B.Music 1981.) He was a significant influence in my
life-changing decision to pursue a career in music education, and for that, I am forever grateful.
Victor's joyful passion for singing and knowledge of how to achieve a beautiful sound, was immeasurable, and it touched my life.

My heart goes out to Beth Ann and all of Victor’s family. Victor was such a fixture at Laurier that it is impossible to imagine it without him. He was a colleague, a teacher, a mentor and later, a friend to me. I learned so many invaluable lessons from him, the most important of which was his abiding passion for music and the singing voice. He will remain with us always through his tremendous legacy—he touched so many. I feel blessed to have known him, and I know my students, who he was teaching and supporting through my sabbatical absence when he died, do too. Lebe wohl, Victor! Your music lives on in us!

On this sad occasion I want to extend my deepest, heartfelt comfort to Beth-Ann, family, friends, and others mourning the loss of a great man, Victor Martens, as I, too, do at this time. I first met Victor during opera week in 1987 when I auditioned for him at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University - A great vocal program that he founded and implemented based on sound principles for optimizing excellence in singing. There, in his humble studio, I stood across from his smiling face and lucid eyes and immediately was aware of his passion for singing and teaching; which I then began to fully realize when I embarked on my studies with him later that autumn. For years I worked with Victor, and forever will he remain in my life and work. His untiring commitment to cultivating the highest vocal technical standards, artistic excellence, and personal best from his students was only one of many attributes that made Victor such a sensational and international rarity as a vocal mentor...and friend. I, as well as countless others, share in the same indebtedness for Victor's place in our lives both professionally and personally. Victor knew and understood the subtleties of how to unlock the singing voice, but he also knew how to unlock the fullness of life in others. After all, this was his own transferable pathway to daily living. His open, generous ability to love others, inclination for mutual understanding, coupled with his inspiring achievement toward creating great vocal virtuosity, illustrates what one man can do! Victor, you were a vocal visionary! Your magnificent ears as a teacher made studies with you a sensation and completely enriching experience from day to day! Your highly sensitive awareness was balanced by a gracious, abiding, and almost clairvoyant nature. Your enduring quest for truth, absolute wisdom, and sympathetic nature will never be forgotten. Your wealth of professional knowledge; compact, sophisticated manner of imparting ideas concerning the true nature of the singing voice were not formally published. But it should be stated, that through your lifetime you became the man behind the faces of so many singers who continue to declare the testament of your pedagogical acumen. Your unpublished endowment is the actual tapestry of voices you ignited, who proudly carry your torch of truths to disseminate to new generations of singers who will also learn from and about you. And like a folk song passed down from one generation to another over decades, if not centuries, your name will shine as a star that you are and always will be. It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to you. I am beholden to you for so many things both vocally and personally. Victor, my words aren't enough evidence to pay homage to the infinite thankfulness that you are so deserving of! You are the fairest blossom sublimely singing from my soul! Your life's work and friendship is a gift that I will cherish eternally. Doug

My sincere condolences to the family of Victor and to Beth Ann.
I feel proud to be part of a legacy that went from Gladys Whitehead to Victor and David at Laurier. While I studied with David Falk officially I often went to see Victor for singing advice. We shared many laughs together. He was truly one of a kind. I was fortunate to have learned from him.
