Dear Carol, Chuck and Catherine,
We were so sorry to hear of John’s passing and unfortunately are away and unable to attend the celebration of his life to offer our personal support.
John was a remarkable man and true friend, who will be missed by many. He was a strong advocate for students and an admired and refreshing leader in our system. Those who worked with him at the WRDSB understand the commitment he made to each role he assumed. Our years working together as a team at the Ed Centre were highlights for me. John kept me grounded - and laughing!
Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
With warm thoughts,
Patti and Steve

I was at Northlake Woods until 2004, and Mr. Spinak was a fantastic principal - a man with the kindest heart who always made you feel welcome. He will be sorely missed by the children that were fortunate enough to go to his school. My sincerest condolences to his family.

I just received the notice of John’s passing and unfortunately we will not be able to attend the celebration of his life. I learned a lot from John and was always in awe of his commitment to students with special education needs. He asked me to go to work at Lutherwood and that was a turning point in my career. On behalf of everyone John helped along the way, students and teachers, thank you. I raise a glass of single malt in his memory.

I had the pleasure of knowing John as our Educational Consultant at Family and Children's Services. The care John had for children and youth was so evident in his work... I marveled at his energy and dedication to helping kids reach their educational goals. John may you rest in peace and know that you had a helping hand in setting many young people on a good path in life.

John was a dynamic leader and defender of vulnerable students. I was so fortunate to have ties to him as my mom’s favourite principal to work with, my step-son’s favourite principal, at Northlake Woods, and as my colleague. He helped advise me to take a scholarship at OISE when I was choosing teacher’s college. We then worked together to support F&CS students with Fetal Alcohol who were attending at Cameron Heights. I was a new SERT and he was a reassuring colleague! I wish all system leaders had the charisma and emotional intelligence that John had. Your family loss is paralleled by our community loss! Peace to your family at this difficult time of grief. From my heart, Nanci Doreen Henderson

John will be sorely missed. This poem reminds us of his passion for sailing and moving on.
Sea Fever
BY JOHN MASEFIELD
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.
