Obituary of Jacqueline (Jackie) Margaret Michel

(nee Berst)

Jackie passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Lanark Heights Long Term Care Centre surrounded by family at the age of 87.

Beloved wife of the late Charles Douglas Michel. Cherished mother of Dawn Bast (Randy) of Oakville and Jane McCarthy (John) of Waterloo. Wonderful Grandma to Jacqueline and Lisa Bast and Meema to Ethan (Shannon) and Eryn McCarthy. Jackie is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Jackie was predeceased by her parents Marland and Clara Berst as well as her two sisters, Patricia Jackson and Geraldine Bell.

Before marrying Doug, Jackie taught school at Wellesley Public School and Highland School in Galt. She never lost her love of teaching and her family never stopped learning from her.

Jackie was most happy tending to her gardens. She was very proud of her property and all of the meticulously planted flora there.  Jackie was also an animal lover.  She cherished her two terriers Brandi and Chester and looked forward to the time they would be reunited.  She was also very kind to all of the creatures who lived in her wooded yard. She had names for all of the well-fed squirrels and chipmunks and could identify them by markings and quirks. When she wasn’t in her gardens, Jackie could be found antiquing throughout Ontario - particularly on trips up to her family cottage on Papineau Lake.

Jackie’s last three years were spent at Lanark where she befriended many residents and their families.  Special thanks to the third-floor nursing and PSW staffs on Pine and to Donna, the nurse in charge of Jackie’s palliative care.

Friends are invited to share their memories of Jackie with her family at a memorial service at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Mark Ehlebracht officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. Friends are invited to remain at a reception for lunch at the funeral home.
