Dear aunt Mary Ellen,
I was so sad to learn of Uncle Don’s passing. I have so many fond memories of family gatherings in Hanover and Waterloo. One of my favourites is of him playing ‘The Easter Parade’ (or anything) on the organ in your front room. He could sure get everybody going...and I’m sure he’s doing just that in his new home, too.
Please know that I’m thinking of you all and sending much love.

Mary Ellen and family, Bea and I were so sorry to learn of Don's passing.
I had the good fortune to work with and for Don for most of my first 20 years at Mutual Life. He truly was a gentle man and a great role model to me both in my career and in my personal life, as at that time I was the youngest member of the then Agency Department and was seeking to find my identity. I vividly recall the tremendous respect all of the field force had for Don when in 1977 he took me with him to a Managers Conference in Vancouver.
We were also privileged in those years to have met you and your children. As we got to know Patti when she babysat for us, it was so clear what great parents you and Don were and it motivated us to try and follow your lead. In this most saddest of times we hope you will be comforted by the many friends and other colleagues of Don's who will be passing along their condolences and stories of their times with him.

Dear Mary Ellen and family,
Judy and I send our sincere condolences. I recall Don fondly from our years working together at Mutual Life, especially his critical work on what was known as “Project 89”. The resulting level commission system was a major factor in the growth and evolution of the career advisor force at Mutual Life / Clarica / Sun Life. Don deserved a huge amount of credit for his creativity and good business sense.
Don was a wise colleague, a true gentleman who was liked and admired by all. He understood and connected deeply with all the sales force members, and was universally liked by his head office friends.
Don epitomized the best of the Mutual culture. He’ll be greatly missed.

Our sincere condolences to Mary Ellen and the family on Don' s passing!
Our association with them started many years ago when Beverley and Mary Ellen drove in the school bus together in Teeswater. We reconnected when we all worked at Mutual Life. We have fond memories of fun with Mary Ellen during her numerous pregnancies and her cravings for ice cream and pickles. We visited them when they lived on Peltz Ave. in Kitchener and I recall baby sitting for them on rare occasions. The fact we ended up not having any children is unrelated.
I have fond memories of our visits with them at the cottage on Conestogo Lake.
I have many pleasant memories of times together with Don when we went to curling bonspiels with Mac Zettel and Frank Miller.
Don was the MC at our wedding 58 years ago. He just gave me the notes he used at our 50th wedding anniversary in 2011 and I still have them.
While our visits have have been less frequent in recent years, we will cherish the memories of fun times we had with Don and Mary Ellen.

What a shock this morning to learn of Uncle Don's passing - and on what would have been Gerald's 95th birthday! I have such fond memories of spending time at Marshall Street with the cousins (playing on the organ, celebrating birthdays, and exploring the woods in the backyard). Hanging out in Hanover, Sauble Beach, and at Conestoga where Uncle Don *tried* to teach me to water ski (not his greatest achievement, for sure). I remember Don playing endless games of Hearts with his brothers while the sister-in-laws gabbed in the kitchen. Coming to see the Waterloo Lahns, and stay with you guys, was always a highlight. Don's jokes at his big-brother's expense, at Nancy's and my wedding in 1983, will always be remembered fondly - especially since it was just 2 days before your 25th Wedding Anniversary!
Don, you will be missed by many! - your kids, grandkids, Mary Ellen, the cousins and the surviving in-laws. Tonight, I'm sure, there will be a game of Hearts going on in Heaven. Say hi to Mom and Dad.
