Obituary of Earl Erwin Widmeyer

With sadness, and just shy of his 85th birthday, the family of Earl Widmeyer, announce that he passed away peacefully on May 17th, with family by his side, at the Lisaard House in Cambridge.

Loving husband of 60 years to Elaine (nee Voelzing), father of Sarah (Kevin) and Joel (Melanie).  He will be affectionately remembered by grandchildren (Kathryn, Alexandra, Henry and Lauren) as well as many friends and extended family.

Earl was predeceased by his parents, David and Melinda Widmeyer and his brother Nelson and his sister Lou.  Earl is survived by his siblings, Vernon and sisters Lorna and Ionne.

Although Earl retired in June of 1993 as the Superintendent of Operations for the Waterloo County Board of Education, his first love was for teaching.  His stories of coaching high school football or reaching that troubled student in the classroom are what he would recant most to family and friends.  His passion and expertise for Shakespeare was of great advantage to his granddaughters’ English assignments.

As a former member and Elder of St John’s Lutheran Church in Waterloo, member of the Kitchener Conestoga Rotary Club, Founding Member of the Men’s Kitchener-Conestoga Probus Club and the Romeos “Retired Old Men Eating Out”, Earl always enjoyed lively debate with friends and being a steward for the community and the next generations.

Earl’s family wish to thank the wonderful doctors and staff of Princess Margaret Cancer Clinic, Grand River Hospital and Lisaard House for the kindness, care and love they showed our father.
