Gertrude "Trudy" Omand

Obituary of Gertrude "Trudy" Omand

(nee Zettel)

Trudy passed away peacefully at her home in Kitchener on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at the age of 92.

Predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Bill Omand, on October 12, 2018.  Loving mother of Jane Sabucco and husband Robert, Barbara Hurlston and husband Garth, and Jim Omand and wife Karen.  Cherished grandmother of Michael (Amanda), Matthew, Vanessa Sabucco, Kathryn and Bradley Hurlston, Cheyanne and Tara Omand and great-grandmother of Tyler Sabucco.  She will be greatly missed by her sisters-in-law Grace Abs and Marjorie Fraser, her many nieces and nephews, and friends at Trinity Village.

Predeceased by her parents Henry Zettel and Caroline Zinger, brothers Hubert Zettel, Albert Zettel, Father Wilfred Zettel, Otto “Skip” Zettel and her sisters Olive Dietrich and Marie Ferguson.

Trudy was born and raised in Wellesley where her father Henry started a hardware store. She attended St Mary’s High School, had a calling to the nursing profession and attained her Registered Nursing designation at St Mary’s Hospital. When presented the opportunity, she ventured out with a friend and fellow nurse to pursue a nursing career in Banff, Alberta and subsequently Vancouver / Victoria BC.  She shared many stories of her times working with the nuns and the patients in the hospitals in the West. She had a strong devotion to her faith and also to her family. When she received word her mother was ill, Trudy immediately came home. After her mother’s passing, she supported and cared for her father in the family home until his passing.

It was also on her return to Wellesley that she was courted by her beloved Bill, and they were married in 1957. Trudy and Bill raised their family in Wellesley with great pride.  They were hard workers, devoted parents and imparted many strong values into their children and grandchildren.  They moved into Kitchener to enjoy 20 years of their retirement at Trinity Village.

Trudy was devoted to her faith and was a role model for her family and others. She was also a great conversationalist and a storyteller who had a great sense of humour. Those who knew her will miss her ability to make everyone feel like part of the family.
