John Stutzman

Obituary of John Charles Stutzman

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of John Charles Stutzman, 91 who passed away August 9th, 2019 at St. Mary’s Hospital, nearly three weeks after a significant fall.

Born in Bloomington, Illinois, he was the son of Clarence Stutzman and Clara Ummel Stutzman.  From a very young age, John fell in love with science—the catalyst for him to become a physician, practising as a Urologist. His care and concern for his patients was exceptional! John’s other passion was music.  Music took root in church where he learned to sing in four-part harmony, was a choir member and played clarinet.  John began cello lessons at age 77 and was proud that his wonderful teacher said he became an “advanced student”.

John is survived by his beloved wife Erma (nee Hunsberger), sister-in-law Elsie and her husband Glen Shantz, sister-in-law Catherine Hunsberger, sister-in-law Ruth Hunsberger, sister-in-law Mary Schiedel, and brother-in-law Ken Hunsberger.

He is predeceased by his mother Clara, father Clarence, stepfather Earl Stutzman and half-brother, James.

John was a much-loved uncle and great-uncle to his many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews and was also dearly loved by Sunny, Hannah and Sophie to whom he was always known as Uncle!

While John had an uncanny ability to make people laugh, it was his demonstrated unconditional love and care for Erma that showed us all what love really looked like.  It was this love and care that brought them back to Waterloo in December 2018 so that Erma could be close to her family.

Visitation is at 1 pm, August 14th at Waterloo North Mennonite Church, 100 Benjamin Rd., Waterloo followed by a service at 2 pm.  A reception will follow.   Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service and interment will be held in Illinois at a later date this August.  Please contact the Mennonite Church of Normal for details.
