I was an intern at Victoria hospital in London. Ron was a 4th year student. I was destined for anesthesia so that while together on cardiac surgery i shuffled off to the coffee shop while Ron joyfully scrubbed complex cases. Several years later our paths crossed in Halifax. He was a delightful individual. Sincere condolences.

I am sorry to learn of this sad news regarding Dr. Pace. He taught me when I was a medical student at Queen's University in the mid-1980's. He was always kind and helpful to myself and my classmates. He wrote a letter of recommendation on my behalf which helped me get accepted into my residency programme. My condolences to his family,

Dr. Ronald Pace was not only an outstanding Surgeon but maybe even more important a caring, thoughtful individual. His outlook on life was straight forward, matter of fact and ‘let’s get it done’ type person. After cancer surgery, the blood tests kept coming back negative so after 2 years and a not so good conclusion, Dr. Pace said, “I want to go in and see what is going on”. He found another tumour and after a frightful earlier diagnosis, he said “now you are good to go”. So thankfully after 15 years, we are still taking one day at a time and very appreciative. Dr. Pace and Penny were a team that was courteous, efficient and delightful to deal with and will be missed by many.
We will plant a White Pine up north and will donate to the KW Cancer Center in his memory.

Dear Mrs. Pace, Michael, Allison and Penny,
My deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Pace. I worked at St. Mary's Hospital Radiology Dept. While I was working Dr. Pace came to the office were I was working in, and I was concerned about a lesion on my leg and I asked Dr. Pace's opinion on what I should do. He told me that to have it removed O.H.I.P. would not pay for it, but he would be willing to remove it free of charge. He was an excellent surgeon, the best of the best! He had a good sense of humor, and he treated both rich and poor in the same way. I am 100% sure that I know were Dr. Pace is. He is glorifying God! He is looking down on us, never to suffer anymore pain. He will be missed.
Kind Regards

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Pace at St. Mary's Hospital on the surgical floors and in the OR. His expertise, knowledge and skill are second to none, as is his compassion towards his patients and respect for us nurses. He also treated my mother-in-law for her pancreatic cancer, and after performing a successful Whipple's procedure, gave her another 8 years on this Earth. He has been and will continue to be missed, as will his keen sense of humour! RIP, Gudrun Owens RN

I had the pleasure of working with Ron in my years at St. Mary’s. In the community I frequently heard from his patients about how he cared for them , the success of their surgery and most important how he treated them with respect and his humour infused conversation. At the hospital, he gave of his time and participated in nursing education sessions sharing his expertise. I was always impressed that he knew each nurse by name.
Condolences to his family. Respectfully Sandra Hett

Dan Santo posted a condolence

My name is Dan Santo and I owe Dr Pace so much for his amazing care of my aunt Ivy Mae Santo, who was my world....not only my aunt...but my second mom for she raised me as a single woman after my mom and dad had passed. Ivy was my aunt, my second mother...my mentor and best friend. Dr Pace showed Ivy such great dedication and love through the many colonoscopies over the years and when the one detected a bowel cancer in 2005 he was amazing not only with his gift as a surgeon but his positive attitude and caring nature. I will never forget his many visits to Ivy after the surgery at Grand River Hospital...A gifted surgeon with a caring heart and outstanding bedside manner is such a rare find....Dr Pace was all three.
4 years after the successful bowel cancer surgery....Ivy returned to Dr Pace's talented and caring hands...this time for another colonoscopy which was needed to verify if a new stage four breast cancer had spread. The additional challenge this time around was that Ivy was now battling an alzheimers which was starting to totally devastate her....I will always remember the kind soul Dr Pace was...as he met me after this colonoscopy...Dr Pace first of all told me that there was no additional cancer found and then so relieved I hugged him and had tears in my eyes as he told me he was so saddened to see Ivy who was so fierce and independent to be so devastated by the alzheimers. Dr Pace told me that Ivy was a special lady who loved me so much...He went on to tell me of all the visits he had with Ivy and how she always talked about me and how proud of me she was. Dr Pace then shook my hand an applauded me for standing by her side and he told me that he knew I loved her so much and then he told me that he would not recommend another colonoscopy because it was just too difficult to put Ivy through that in her condition....I was so impressed that Dr Pace took the time and showed such love to Ivy and myself.
My final visit with Dr Pace happened close to six years later after Ivy died at her nursing home in the final stage of alzheimers. After Ivy died...I did a tour of thanking all the amazing medical professionals that were found on Ivy's final journey home....Which included Grand River Hospital...Freeport Hospital and included Dr Pace. I will always remember that last visit with Dr Pace ...I shook his hand and thank him for helping to give me more time with Ivy and his dedication to her care and his amazing heart. Dr Pace was so humble ...he thanked me for coming and again went on to compliment my aunt Ivy and he told me he was going to miss Ivy who was his patient for many years and again talked about her love for me....I hugged Dr Pace again with tears flowing down and thanked him for being a gifted surgeon but most importantly a good man.
I am saddened by news of Dr Pace's death....He was the best doctor I have ever met who truly cared about his patients...who went out of his way to get to know his patients...who provided his skills...and gave hope and support to the patients and their families....He was truly one of a kind. We need more doctors like Dr Pace. I want to provide my condolences to his family and friends and his patients who became friends. Thank you Dr Pace for who you were....a kind soul...a gifted surgeon and a good man...Dan Santo will miss you so....Thank you...God Speed...and Rest in Peace.

Dr. Pace truly was a special surgeon.Eli had 3 surgeries. In 2006 Ron performed an emergency liver resection, in 2012 a hernia surgery, & in 2017 a colon resection. All 3 surgeries proved to be difficult. He was always very compassionate & extremely thorough & carried a sense of humor. We owe gratitude for all he did for us. Elizabeth was always reassured with Ron's high level of care for her husband. Dr. Pace became a special friend to us & our family!

Dear Ellen, Michael, and Allison. I am sorry to read of Ron's passing. My husband (Dana Bennett) and I had the pleasure of both working with him, as well as, being treated by him. Dana knew Ron as a salesman for endoscopy equipment, and I was a thorn in his side when surgical wait times were introduced :) I will be forever grateful for the life-saving surgery that gave Dana 2 1/2 extra years with our two young boys as Dana fought cancer. Allison, you likely taught hundreds of people to row, but I was one of them. I still remember that short time as I found out I was pregnant with my second son that summer. It was lovely to read you have a girl of your own now. I hope each of you is able to cherish the many memories he has left behind; He certainly had a profound effect on many of us, and to be a great man you must have a great family backing you. Take good care. Kerri Bennett

I’m sitting at my desk today thinking of my 20 years working with him and Ellen I can’t stop thinking of how much his patients meant to him. He had one fellow that didn’t have anyone to take him home after surgery. Well he did He took him home and brought him
Into his house until someone was home to take care of him. One pt wanted to take him fishing and trying to find a free afternoon was very challenging. He made every minute count. But he did. He went out and bought new lures for the occasion. Another wanted to golf with him and he worked that on too. He had a special way making them feel that they mattered and were in great hands. That always stands out for me not only how talented he was but how he cared for everyone of all ages classes or creeds. You were special to get a sweet nick name from him too. You are going to be missed by so so many. I enjoyed every day working with you. You always were a great mentor and teacher and placed a great deal of trust in me to book your cases and help patients. I loved that you called me your Radar O’riley.
Thinking of you always

Penny, I just found out about Dr Pace. I am so sad. He was a wonderful man. I first met him when Trent was 6 weeks old, then he cared for my father, Ken Rody. He was the most compassionate man I have ever met, and you are the one who always greeted patients and made them laugh, you are awesome. Thank you and Dr Pace for everything you did for my family....Sue Rody

Dr Pace saved my life. When I had cancer he was so encouraging and I never lost hope with him in my corner. He always had time for me and through his skills I am here today. He will be missed dearly by everyone. People that worked with him at the hospital could never stop saying enough good things about him, both professionaly and as as great human being. He was truly one of the good people on this earth. We should all work to be more like Dr Pace!

I work in the endoscopy unit at GRH, for over 20 years Ron Pace was our Wednesday morning fixture. He always told us it was his favourite morning of the week! His good cheer made the unit feel festive and alive. He made us all feel special by asking us about our families and lives. He'd love to tell tales of recent holidays and experiences. He was never overwhelmed and took on whatever came his way in the hospital. He was a skilled surgeon who made his mark on our community. Patients would say going to his office was like going on a mini vacation. It was such a pleasant atmosphere. He won't be forgotten by this generation. It's hard to believe he's gone. I think I'll still be waiting for the mint chocolates he happily delivered every Christmas! Joyce Weinert
