Phil was a stalwart of the newsroom. Very tenacious: woe betide the official who wanted a short and sweet press conference if Phil had questions to ask. My favourite Phil story is when the then-mayor Dom Cardillo, who seemingly had a Cuisinart running his brain's speech processing centre, phoned the newsroom looking for Phil. "Which Phil?" asked the desk person, as there was a Phil Bast, a Phil Walker... "Phil Jabblesack," shouted Cardillo. Yes sir, transferring your call now.
