I remember Irma as the powerhouse of school libraries and librarianship in the schools of Waterloo. Her ability to get services and resources to schools in the early 70's was a tremendous accomplishment. Her ability to build confidence in others and to be an extraordinary professional is to be truly admired. Among her many achievements was her ability to tell Rudyard Kipling stories verbatim from memory-- a constant source of amazement to her colleagues. She will be missed by many. Irma was a long time friend to me, first as we worked together on the church library at First United, and then later, when we started the Out of the Cold program. Her cheerful face each Saturday morning as she prepared breakfast for 70 people experiencing homelessness was a blessing to many. When we transitioned to only offering an evening program, Irma started coming in to greet the people as they arrived. She spread joy to all of us!

I've only had the pleasure of knowing Irma for a short time, but she still made a big impact on me. She was always so caring of others. She loved to tell me stories, and my favourite memory of her is that she would often tell me her favourite word was serendipity. It's when good things happen by accident or a stroke of luck. She would tell me of times in her life she thought were serendipitous. I believe me meeting Irma was serendipity in my life. She was a very special person. I will miss her and remember her for a very long time. -Julie

I worked with Irma for a number of years at Conrad Grebel College in Waterloo where she was the Librarian and I was the Archivist. She was always friendly, patient, supportive and gentle. I didn't see her much in recent years, but my memories are fond.

My Mom, sister Joan and I were saddened by the news of Irma's death. Irma was one of my Mom's dearest friends. They shared many long conversations about family, life and Black Walnut Society business during car rides, lunches and meetings.
I had the privilege of working for your Mom at Conrad Grebel for a short time while she reorganized the library. I created, by hand:), new Dewey decimal labels for the end of each bookcase and shelved books. She was so lovely and pleasant! I always think of her when driving by or walking down Avondale Avenue.
May her memory be a blessing. To live in the hearts of those we love is never to die.

Irma was a well loved friend and neighbour. I loved our coffee mornings where we would try a different cafe each time. And I so enjoyed our visits in her kitchen and accompanying her to her church strawberry socials and Christmas dinners. Sometimes we are fortunate to come across a treasure in our lives and Irma was that treasure for me. I will miss her lovely sense of humour and her great chuckle. A wonderful lady.

My condolences to Irma's family. She was a great friend and coworker at the Region of Waterloo Public Library Headquarters. When we decided to make a special quilt for her, all of the children's authors and illustrators happily signed a block and sent it in. Library staff enjoyed the Quilting Bee to put it together. Another moment I remember was telling her that my brother was getting married and would have an instant family. Irma immediately sent some children's book to my niece. It was greatly appreciated.
