I had the pleasure of meeting Don almost 8 years ago. My now husband (his Grandson Kenny), introduced me to their lovely family and Don, or "Poppa" as well called him, was friendly, warm and excited to welcome me with open arms. When we spoke, he reminded me that it actually wasn't the first time we had met. He said, "I remember meeting you a long time ago with your Dad when you were a little girl!" You see, my family and the Smiley's had a special connection that went back decades. Thanks to Don, Geraldine and Debbie, Kenny and I were persuaded to meet each other and we are now happily married.
I will never forget Poppa's jokes and his warm and loving smile. He was truly a wonderful man and will be missed greatly.

My dad and his 2 buddies were building a snow fort many many years ago. As they got ready to have their snowball fight, they heard footsteps and stood up, everyone thinking it was the other person sneaking upon them. Well, they began pelting the person with snowballs - and it is was Constable Smiley doing a check on what the caller said: "were 3 young boys up to no good!" My dad has told me this story I don't know how many times laughing about how Cst Smiley was so good about it, he laughed and then pelted them.....then took them all home. Then many years later, my mom and dad would run their own store and gas bar at Wagners Corners, Constable Smiley would stop in and chat with my parents. They were very fond of him. They shared a good laugh when my dad reminded him of the snowball incident and admitted it was him. 29 years ago, I started with WRPS and I have heard such great stories about Don. His legacy still exists to this day. Great copper, great man. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My dad extends his condolences to your family as well - my mom passed a few years ago but she also had fond memories of Don. Take care and I wish you all the best. We are very sorry to read of his passing.

Geraldine and family, Frank and I were sorry to hear of Don's passing. We were quite glad we got up there for the visit with you a few years back, and have wanted to get back again for another visit. We thoroughly enjoyed that day. Don is at peace now and no longer in pain. Have faith that he will remain close to you in your hearts and he will never be that far away. RIP Don
