I will always be grateful to him for the opportunity he gave me to join him at Seagram. It was a huge influence on my life. He was a wonderful grandfather to The daughters of Karen and myself. He was a good and decent man. He shall be missed.

SENT BY JANET KURT;
FIRST OFF I WISH TO CONVEY TO EVERYONE HOW GRATEFUL WE ARE FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS LIKE YOU;
MY MEMORIES OF MY FATHER;
HE WAS A HUMANITARIAN
HE WAS GENEROUS
HE WAS HUMBLE, POLITE AND PATIENT
HE WAS AN EXCELLENT BROTHER, FATHER, GRANDFATHER, AND JUST A WONDERFUL PERSON.
RAISED IN A SPIRITUAL FAMILY BUT HIS FATHER WAS PROTESTANT AND HIS MOTHER WAS A STRONG CATHOLIC.
IT WAS DECIDED BY HIS PARENTS THAT WHEN THE CHILDREN CAME OF AGE 16 THEY WOULD DECIDE THEMSELVES WHICH RELIGION THEY WOULD PRACTICE. THIS EQUATES TO THE FACT THAT HALF MY RELATIVES ARE PROTESTANT AND THE OTHER HALF ARE CATHOLIC.
HE HAD A VERY HIGH WORK ETHIC; AT ONE POINT HE HAD 3 JOBS TO SUPPORT MY MOTHER, WHO'S HEALTH WAS NOT ALWAYS AT IT'S PEAK. THEY HAD 4 CHILDREN [JANET DAVID, SHARON AND KAREN 'THE TWINS'] UNDER THE AGE OF 5 THAT NEEDED TO BE RAISED AND SUPPORTED. PROVIDING FOR HIS FAMILY WAS TOP PRIORITY, ALTHOUGH HE DID FIND TIME TO PLAY POOL AND GO BOWLING, AND BE A BAR TENDER AT THE LEGION. HE COULD NOT HAVE DONE THESE THINGS WITHOUT THE DEVOTION AND HELP OF 2 SUPERIOR WOMEN IN HIS LIFE, OUR MOTHER JESS AND HIS EQUALLY STRONG MOTHER CATHERINE.
HE SPENT 47 YEARS AT SEAGRAM'S DISTILLERY. I CAN REMEMBER WALKING THROUGH WATERLOO PARK TO MEET HIM.
DAD MADE REGULAR DONATIONS TO CHARITIES, CHURCH,THE LEGION, AND THE NAVY CLUB, DISADVANTAGED PEOPLE ON THE STREETS.
I COULD GO "ON AND ON" ABOUT MY QUIET STRONG HERO BUT THESE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS THAT I ADMIRED ABOUT HIM AND WANTED TO SHARE.
BE IN PEACH DAD. YOU DESERVE IT.

WRITTEN BY ROSEMARY PAUL
I was Bert's only sister, Rosemary. The pecking order for our family is as follows;
Gerald, Bert, Donny, Doug, Grant [died at age 3 months] Carl, Rosemary, Gord and last but not least Bruce.
When you think of all my brothers you can imagine how excited I was when my first niece arrived. Janet was adorable and I loved to fuss over her.
One of my favourite childhood memories was the Christmas about age 10 or 11 Bert gave me a shiny blue bicycle.
Carl mentioned the winter trips to Fla. where the main event was golfing. The guys were very money conscious and if a
ball goes astray they put +++ effort into retrieving it. The alligator stories cracked me up! They lurked in the ponds and grass
on the courses.
Bruce the youngest brother was always after Bert to borrow his credit card or cell phone [to call Alaska]
Al and I visited Bert on the Friday before he passed away. We talked of our family, and the many times we visited Bert
at Trinity and played cribbage. Al was always trying to out maneuver Bert as was I. We won occasionally but Bert was the Champ.
Bert's care worker shared a story of a Birthday party held for a resident. Unfortunately a gentleman had his pants fall down;
without missing a beat Bert said it was the first Birthday party he was at that someone "danced his pants off!"
Bert, you have no idea how much we miss you and your wit.
RIP Brother,
Rosemary

Message from Mary Bernadette;
I went through my mental archives and remember our fathers [Uncle Ken and Bert] supporting a young girl from Jamaica
? Maxine throughout her life/education. They supported her with money for tuitions, uniforms, books and school supplies. She would practice writing and grammar skills by writing letters and sending pictures about her life happenings and schooling. She sent a picture with her uniform on and I would respond in kindness with my dad "dictating" and overseeing my response to her newsy elementary letters.
I don't remember how many years I did that but I know they sponsored her until she didn't need help any more.....likely when she finished school or maybe turned age 16 or 18.

Hello Janet;
Here is a strange coincidence.
Your dad died on Tues. Sept 1. I had put one of his golf towels that you gave me, on my golf bag the week before.
On Sept 2 I shot a 73 at Conestoga......the lowest score that I have had in 25 years. Also, I got a HOLE IN ONE during that round.
Although I never met your dad it is a strange coincidence.
Thanks for the help Bert.

MEMORIES FROM BROTHER CARL;
Bert taught Carl to drive in 1953; Carl's wife Beverley says Bert did a lousy job!!
Bert played for Seagram fastball team a number of years and bowled for the Seagram bowling team.
For a number of years Bert drove brothers Carl and Bruce to Fla. to play golf with brother Doug who spent winters in Fla.
These auto experiences provided continuous bursts of laughter to this day; ie; Bert used to buy a 2 litre bottle of 7 UP for mix but then filled the empty pop bottle with Vodka to transport it back across the boarder. ANYTHING TO SAVE A BUCK!
Bert was continuously the butt of jokes from his younger brother Bruce, but Bert always had a great one line reply.
Bert will be forever remembered for attending our traditional Christmas Eve church service before going back to daughter
Janet's for a time of family celebration.
Forever cherished by his grandchildren for his attention to them, and being their number one cheerleader at fastball and basketball games.
RIP Brother.
Carl

Growing up, I always remember Grandpa being around. I remember going for backyard BBQ's at Grandpa and Jannie's house and playing Hide and Seek. Grandpa was at all my ringette games and even some practices when I needed a ride. I vividly remember going to Harvey's with Grandpa and Corey [my cousin] and learning of Poutine when Corey ordered his. Grandpa spent an incredible amount of time with us and I had no idea how rare that was until I got older. Even visiting him at Trinity Village he indulged me when I suggested we do a puzzle that I found nearby (I doubt he wanted to work on a dog but he quietly laughed his way through it). He never said "no" to me when it came to spending time together. He was so patient.
Grandpa was a staple of my childhood and gave me so many memories that I cherish.
HE DANCED WITH ME DURING THE FATHER DAUGHTER DANCE AT MY GRADE 8 GRADUATION! and he was always happy to go for a Dairy Queen after a ball game. He had a quiet presence but his actions spoke volumes!
I always felt safe with him and I hope he knows how much his time and efforts meant to me.
My childhood was brighter because of him and I will be forever grateful.
He truly was the best Grandpa a girl could ask for.

Remembering my Grandpa;
Checkers: it was a game of strategy, patience, contemplation and competition. When I was a kid I was pretty good at the competitive part, but the rest did not come naturally. That's where grandpa came in.
At some point when I was very young grandpa decided most of our time would be spent making a worth checkers opponent; I was up for the challenge. We spent hours hunkered over the checkers board, silently calculating and assessing the others next move. No matter the circumstance- a quick visit when we lived down the street, or a busy family Christmas- I like to think after years of his training the outcome must have been 50/50, but I suspect he may have let me have some wins.
For the 'strong and silent' type - which I think described us both pretty accurately- the quiet strategic challenge of checkers was the ideal way to spend a few hours and that we did very often. The virtue of patience is not something I was necessarily born with,
but he forced me to hone it at this young age so I could "best" him now and then over that checker board.
To this day, as I pack up my portable checker camping checkers board, I will think of grandpa and remember our games fondly.
This next win is for you.

My thoughts of Grandpa; I remember things like feeding the chipmunk in the backyard with him; sitting in the basement building card pyramids while he watched golf; going to the Dairy Queen on weekends and those wooden beeds on his car seat.
He always brought KFC to the family functions.

Dearest Grandpa;
What I will miss most about you is all the love and support you have given your grandchildren and others for all your years. I will never forget you coming to ball games and cheering us on and even rewarding us with some cash after the game so we could get some ice cream or a "Harvey's" burger. Your humour and wit was beyond words; always sharp as a whip. How can I ever forget your go to joke of "how come there are more horses than there are horses?"
And the times you would let me sit on your lap and drive the car at an age of about .....12.
You were so kind to all and for that I am Thankful. You have taught me many valuable life lessons which I will carry with me for days to come. You are a special person not just to your family but many others.
Thank You for everything you have taught me over the years and for always being my #1 fan.
Lots of Love

My big brother Bert and Jessie gave me my first and only two wheel bicycle when I was 10 or 11. He was 14 years older so when they had kids I was old enough to babysit. Although we weren't close in age. I always knew I could count on him Bert had a great sense of humour and at our many family dominoes evenings would crack us up with his one liners. We are thankful he is at rest. Your loving sister, Rosemary
