I shared this on Facebook, but thought I'd share it here too:
My friend and mentor, Dr. Harold Remus died this week.
He was a kind man and a scholar, with an activist’s heart, working hard every day to make the world a better, more just and loving place for others.
He had a sharp pen and I loved receiving his latest Letter to the Editor and his letters to politicians on important policy changes and ideas.
But it wasn’t just words. He marched with Martin Luther King — and he taught me feminism in my 20s when it was still a dirty word to most academics, and male allies weren’t at all common. He had an instinct for fairness and used his sharp intellect to call out inequities wherever he saw them.
After I graduated, he and another friend, Joe (a cartoonist) and I would go for Chinese food every month or two and talk politics, history and culture. He was widely read and interested in everything. We could talk for hours and often did.
When I moved away we kept in touch, a few emails every couple of years. His Christmas letters were always something I looked forward to every year.
He and his wife Alice came to visit me in Ottawa, and it was a real honour for me to be able to introduce him to my husband and my kids and have them eat a meal in our home.
Harold, you will be missed. From you I learned to use words for good, actions for change and reflection for inner peace. I’m still working on the last one. I hope I do your legacy proud one day. xoxo

Alice and the family, sorry for your loss.
Harold is a Christian model in my life, encouraged me and supported me to become a pastor to serve His people. His kindness, humble and gentleness touched everyone who encounted him.

My condolences to Alice and family. Harold was my New Testament professor in seminary and over the years I’ve had conversations with him. I always appreciated his knowledge and enthusiasm for things theological. In class he encouraged me to be a better student. Blessings on all who are grieving. Dale Finch

Harold was a very gentle, compassionate soul. His leadership created an outstanding adult education program at St. Mark's for many years.
