Dear Family of John:
Wishing you God's strength and comfort as you grieve the loss of such a good man. I remember my father who farmed next door to the Cornies farm, talking often about how much he had appreciated spending time with John when John was a young boy. May the blessing that John was to so many people live on.

The talents of John Cornies a man of who hand wove lawn chairs as a wedding gift for me many years ago which I still use. Plus he made a wooden mobile and name plate for my son when he was born. He will be greatly missed

Dear Helen, Ron, Sandra and your families,
I was surprised and saddened to learn of John's illness and recent death.
I remember John as a very honest loyal person. We worked very closely together while I was at Hamilton Mennonite church. His tireless support and courageous leadership will always be gratefully remembered . I knew him as a one who was guided by generosity and a deep innate sense of realism. His keen perception of the world around him equipped him to make wise judgements as well as offer sage counsel. I valued the many heart felt talks that we had together. His passing is our loss and I know that he will be missed. I send my heartfelt love and sympathy to Helen and the family. May the Grace that surrounded us all while we were together continue to surround you now, and to accompany John on his final voyage home.
Peace and Love.

Dear Helen, Martha and Annie (with the rest of your families),
We were saddened to hear of Johnny's passing (thank-you, Martha, for leaving the message; I did pass along word to my brothers). I have many fond memories of the Cornies family from my youngest days visiting Leamington every summer. It was nice to have chances to check in over the years -- sorry not to have followed up like my Mom did. I know that Johnny was always one of favourite nephews, and it meant a great deal that you guys were able to come to Ottawa when both Dad and then Mom died. I am sorry not to have been able to come to offer condolences on Jake's passing last fall, or for Johnny's now. May you all know the enfolding arms of Jesus and His peace which surpasses all understanding. Love and blessing in Him.

Dear Helen and family,
We were so saddened to hear of John’s passing, a loving husband, father and grandfather. Although he had not lived in Leamington for many years, it was always great to visit with him and catch up on family and reminisce about old times!! John was so involved in the church community and will be sorely missed by all. God grant you peace and strength as you mourn his passing

Ron, I've been thinking of you and your family over the past few months. This is hard, your dad was a good guy and very active part of your life. Kara and Henry - I've been there at your age, and it's hard. I hope you find the words to talk about how you are feeling. Karen - I hope this finds you well, including as you re-process memories of your own dad's passing all now mixed in with John's. And to both Ron and Karen - look after your mothers, I know you will.

I am very sorry to learn of the passing of John. I was thinking of the Cornies family just the other day. My step-grandma, Mary Guymer (nee Tiessen) was John's aunt, and she thought so highly of him, as did my grandpa, Wilf. Mary had great affection for all her nephews and nieces. I had the pleasure of meeting John and Helen on a number of occasions: kind and lovely people. Please accept my condolences on behalf of the Guymer family.

Uncle John was never afraid to do things differently, even eating his slice of pie backwards. I remember asking him why he ate it that way. He said " because if you were to eat an entire pie you would start at the crust and not the middle."
I asked when he had eaten an entire pie, he said "I don't want to talk about it."
Will miss him and his humour.

Mrs. Cornies and family, my sincere condolences to you on the passing of Mr. Cornies. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Mr. Cornies would always welcome me into his home while his son and I grew up together from elementary to post-secondary school. I remember him taking Ron and I to the Pink Panther and Herbie the Lovebug movies. He always showed concerned for others through Church and school. May he rest in peace.

Dear Helen and Family. I remember John for some 65 years. I looked up to him as a student at UMEI. Then as a brother at Hamilton Mennonite church for 42 years. John served our church, the wider church, Welcome Inn, COSA and the Mennonite Conferences in Ontario with humility and integrity. I loved his enthusiasm for Silver Lake, Mennonite Disaster Service and any project he was involved with.
Jessie and I are filled with saddness at your loss but rejoice with the angels for John's heavenly reward. "Well done thou good and faithful servant"

Dear Helen, children and family,
On behalf of MCEC, I want to add our words of condolence on John's death. And I want to add our words of appreciation for John's gifts that he shared generously and effectively with the wider church. There were many, but in particular I think about John's role as moderator of MCEC from 1997 to 2000. Prior to that, he was also moderator of the United Mennonite Conference at the time of integration in 1988. Sam Steiner tells us that John was one of the moderators to light the “integration” candles at that time. We hope and trust that the many stories from his life will become treasured memories for you and give you strength, even as you mourn this loss.
Arli Klassen, the current MCEC Moderator

I am so sad to hear this news! John always took time to talk to me, and as an equal rather than adult to child. I looked forward to seeing him at church, and was thrilled when he became my principal for grades 7-8. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers as you say good-bye.
