I was in downtown Waterloo yesterday near the church and I remembered that Carl was very involved in it. Sad to see that he has passed.
I was a caregiver for Ken and MaryAnn and just wanted to let you know what a good son he was to them. It made such a difference to them to have him giving 24 hour care for those last precious months.
They were so blessed to have Carl in their life.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Carl. I'm still new to the KW Kiwanis Club and have enjoyed several dinners with Carl. Carl has always been welcoming to me and is a man that embodies quiet dignity. Carl will be missed and I express my genuine condolences to his family - who must feel the weight of his loss as he is obviously a wonderful, kind-hearted man. I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to know Carl, even if just for a short time. May his family be embraced with peace & comfort during this time of grief.

On behalf of all members of the Kiwanis Club of Elmira we wish to express our deepest and sincerest condolences. Carl was a long serving member of our Club and over the years was involved in many of its activities. He was always the first to volunteer to assist with fund-raising projects. Carl became well known for his desire to make the world a better place. For example, I have often watched as he meticulously sorted and disposed of all recyclable materials remaining at the end of our many fund raising projects.
Carl was a very unassuming, kind and generous man. He would oftentimes make a financial contribution whenever extra funds were needed. His expressions of gratitude were made without any fanfare. We will all miss Carl very much. For me I will always remember Carl as a gentle giant and a remarkable gentleman.
Several of our members have contributed expressions of condolences and I have attached them belo.
Murray Haight,
President Kiwanis Club of Elmira.
Carl was so generous with his time and resources in giving to Kiwanis and scouting and many other charitable causes, he was a model for all of us. At Kiwanis meetings Carl was usually the first to volunteer for projects and quite often ended up doing the jobs that nobody else wanted to do, but he always worked with patience and good humour( preparing a bushel of beans for cooking comes to mind). He was a great guy and we will miss him.
Jim Schwindt.
Many good memories from my times with Karl. I think the one that stands out for me and epitomizes Karl’s passion for recycling was his taking home all of the wet/smelly paper towels he used to dry the fish at our fish frys – a job he did many times. He would bury these paper towels in his garden. I picked him up at home one day and he introduced me to his ‘farm’ – the biggest and fattest earthworms I’ve ever seen! Nothing went to waste and the environment was better for it.
Jim Stewart.
Carl was an very kind helpful person. He provided many thought provoking ideas at our board meetings and breakfasts. We appreciate all the work he did in selling grocery and cash cards over the past several years. The various speakers he found for our meetings we’re very interesting and informative. He worked diligently in keeping Waterloo North Satellite Club in communication with the Elmira Kiwanis Club. There is a big hole left in our club’s membership roster.
Please accept our condolences on the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. We will miss his friendship and presence at our club meetings.
Ron Wagner
Carl was incredibly caring in his approach to life & people. A hard example to follow.
Rhonda Chandler.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Carl’s passing. Carl was a ‘servant leader’ and lead by example. He was always positive and looking for ways to help others. Carl hated waste. He would go out of his way to recycle everything and in fact he was at my house just a couple weeks ago, picking up electronic waste to be recycled. Carl was full of ideas and he was also good at listening to others’ ideas. He was a wonderful addition to our club when Waterloo North joined Elmira. He was a helpful board member and never shied away from rolling up his sleeves and pitching in on work regardless of the temperature. Carl will be missed. Our thoughts go out to his family. He was a good man.

My family first met Carl 17 years ago when my oldest son Liam joined the Beavers at Emmanuel United Church. All these years later Liam is now an engineering student thanks in part to encouragement and support from Carl. When Liam and his brothers transitioned over to Beavers, Cubs and Scouts at First United, Carl was a constant, steady presence. Always there at Apple Day, parades, camps and the annual Baden Powell dinner. My youngest son Riley was thrilled when Carl presented him with the Cub Car trophy. I greatly appreciate that my children had Carl as a role model of community service. Our sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Mrs. Thompson and family,
On behalf of Emmanuel at Brighton Child Care Centre, I send our sincerest condolences.
Carl was such an integral part of the success that Emmanuel Church Day Nursery achieved when it began its journey to a new home. Brighton Public School would not have been realized without the support and generosity of Carl. Carl was also a supporter of quality child care which went hand in hand with the care he felt for his overall community. Almost 18 years ago Emmanuel at Brighton came to be, where we continue to grow bright futures in Waterloo Region. Thank you Carl.
With Care and Sincerity,
Lori Mar, on behalf of Emmanuel at Brighton Child Care Centre

Carl was one of the most generous and caring people I knew at the University of Waterloo. When I was a young professor in his department, he looked for ways to help me get started. He involved me in some of his research so I would have a chance to publish a few more papers, he loaned me the photoelasticity models he had built so my students could better visualize the stresses in various engineering structures, and he often dropped by just to see how I was doing. I learned that he was involved in Scouting, his church, home repair and many other endeavours, and I know that in all of these he gave of himself to help others. My thoughts and prayers are with Mary, the boys and the extended family.

Over the years I had lost contact with Carl but that did not diminish the fond memories I have of the time we spent together with the 17th Waterloo Scouting Group. Carl was one of the driving forces, instrumental in the formation of 17th Waterloo and the main reason for its success for a number of years. His guidance, devotion, counsel and tireless work made my job as Scout Leader so much easier. The memories of Carl will last a life time both for myself and all the youth Carl touched. My deepest sympathies, I hope the family can find solace in the thought of how many lives Carl touched. We are all the better for his being!

My heartfelt condolences to Carl's family! I was supported by Emmanuel United Church in making the transition from ministry in another denomination into United Church ministry, and Carl was always a steady and encouraging presence. Even after I moved away from Waterloo to serve rural UCC churches, I would return to find Carl's persistent patience and inspiration to embrace yet another positive outlook! He was such a pleasure to converse with. Besides the grocery card fundraiser (which Neal mentioned in his tribute to Carl), I also remember Carl's careful attention to details such as asking me to bring any clean canning jars to his front porch that I no longer needed. I was always hoping to see Carl when I brought them there. Although during this time of Covid our ability to make connections is restricted, please know that my prayers and best wishes during this difficult time are with you all. Blessings! Felicia Urbanski

Carl was a gentle and caring man. He always had a kind thing to say and he would ask after everyone in my family. We crossed paths many times from when I was a little Beaver at 17th Waterloo based at Emmanuel United Church. Apple Day was a highlight when we would return triumphantly to the church with our empty baskets and full jars of coins. Carl would be carefully counting everything in the church kitchen. Several decades later, Carl was the broker for Emmanuel's grocery card fundraising program which meant that he and I would meet several times a month when I picked up our order. No matter what else was going on, he always paused long enough to ask about my family. On one of my visits, just days after I was married, he invited me to clip a fresh rose to take home to my wife. Whether he was participating in camping trips with Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, or planning a weekend at the cottage, Carl loved the outdoors. We will miss his quiet and steady presence.

Carl, or “Lobo” as he was affectionately known to our youth, was the Group Commissioner of 4th Waterloo Scouts. He was a community builder, and always took the time to make connections with leaders, youth and their parents. He spent tireless hours shopping for food for our weekend camps, always looking for the best deals to stretch our donation dollars. The ice cream toppings he provided for our end of year DQ hikes were legendary. We will miss his kind eyes, and gentle spirit.
Rest In Peace, dear Carl. You will be truly missed.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Carl’s passing. We met in the early 80’s in my years in banking. We became friends and stayed in touch. He knew I was a member of Kiwanis and was very interested in what we did and wanted to contribute. He became a member of Waterloo North Kiwanis club and helped with many projects including the Annual Citizenship Court. Fundraising through sales of Poinsettias each year and the annual shredding event. Carl was a passionate and caring volunteer. We met weekly until recently due to Covid we couldn’t. He would always have a gentle smile come with new ideas. Sometimes proudly wearing nail polish his grandchildren had painted on.
Condolences to the family and may you Rest In Peace Carl.

I’m shocked to hear of Carl’s passing. As a fellow member of Kiwanis, I appreciated Carl’s positive attitude and service to others. Because of COVID we haven’t been together since March but Carl dropped by my house just a couple weeks ago to pick up and deliver some electronic waste for recycling - a cause close to his heart. Carl hated waste and was on a mission to reduce it as much as possible. At board meetings he often asked the tough questions and was always taking on projects he could help with. And, if any project needed some start-up funding or support, he was quick to donate to help others in need. The world will be missing a bright light, Kiwanis will be missing a tireless volunteer, and our condolences go out to his loving family. Our thoughts are with you.

It saddens me to learn of Carl's passing and I pray for Mary and family in this difficult time.
I occasionally crossed paths with Carl in Scouting but particularly remember his role at the university in evaluating work term report presentations (back in the day when "slides" meant a handful of overhead transparencies). A good man indeed!
