Pearl was such an inspiration and a force of nature. An incredible role model as a mother of 3, a wife and an incredidle Dean of Engineering. My deepest and most sincere condelences to Tom and our children; she is dearly missed and she will be forever in my heart. I first met Pearl when she asked me to be on the committee for one of her PhD student, shortly after I had started at UW. I was just starting to mentor and supervise my own graduate students at UW and this was just the beginning of how Pearl inspired me to be a good graduate supervisor and mentor as well as leader. I have so many great memories from Pearl, she was a fierce but kind leader, she had an amazing vision of what Waterloo Engineering could accomplish and yet she was always so down to earth with us and always took the time to connect and have important personal conversations. It always meant a lot to me that she would take the time to cross the formal salutation of a letter and write my first name as well as a short handwritten note on a memo. I remember how she used the whiteboard in meetings to explain some of the budget model and how she would get animated around student concerns, she so deeply cared about improving the students' experience in engineering. Many fond memories of her visits at WE events and at convocation, I always wished we had more time to chat but I am forever grateful for the passion she shared with us, for her vision and the inspiration she gave. I am a better person for having known her and worked with her.

Dean Sullivan was a wonderful role model to have as an engineering student from 2009-2014. She was very in touch with us and I saw her come out to many events to cheer us on. As a woman, it made a big difference to see her in a leadership position, and to be celebrated and admired for her merits. I am thankful for the pride and confidence she instilled in me. Myself and all of my peers hold so much respect for her and I send my sincere condolences to her family for their loss. We will all will miss her greatly.

I had the privilege of getting to know Pearl during my time as Interim Dean of Applied Health Sciences in 2018-19. I will never forget her endless energy and enthusiasm, but most of all her kindness and generosity. Even though my term as Interim Dean ended in June 2019, she treated me to a Christmas lunch at the University Club. I am sorry that I did not have a chance to return the favour, but will try to pay forward her example of kindness. Pearl Sullivan will be greatly missed, but she has left a remarkable legacy. Sincerest condolences to her family.

Pearl was my mentor throughout my graduate studies and will always have my deepest respect. Her poor health leading up to my graduation was a cause for sadness and concern. I was overjoyed when I learnt she was on the road to recovery at that time, and treasure that she was able to be there for my graduation. (I treasure the moment for the evident joy on her face.) A recurring theme in discussions with her research group was her desire to someday take a step back from leadership and focus on the mentorship and pursuit of knowledge that she found greatly rewarding. Following her ongoing career from I distance I was happy to see that this seemed to be happening in 2020 and therefor was devastated by news of her death. I can not imagine how this time was for her family, and wish to express my deepest condolences to them.

I met the dynamo that was Pearl Sullivan when I was the representative of the School of Computer Science to the Council of the Faculty of Engineering, a representation created by the fact that the Software Engineering degree program was jointly owned by the School of Computer Science in Math and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Engineering. Even though I rarely spoke up at the meetings, she learned and remembered who I was and said "hello" to me by name whenever I encountered her anywhere on campus.
I will miss her.

Pearl was a pioneer and a force to be reckoned with. I had the opportunity to work with Pearl on numerous occasions as an engineering student leader. I took this photo of her in July 2016 at the inaugural Engineering Day. Her presence always reminded me that a BIPOC woman can make it to the top of a Canadian academic institution. For that, I will always look up to her. Thanks for everything, Pearl. Rest well.

To the Sullivan family:
I wept a little when I heard about Pearl's passing. She had about her an air of nobility and grace that naturally compelled respect wherever she went. She always greeted everyone with a warm smile and friendly word, regardless of their position. She was an exemplar of kindness and compassion, while taking the heavy cares of the Faculty onto her shoulders as few others could.
Her administration will be remembered as a time of enlightenment and realization of much human potential. Asking what it means to be an engineer in the 21st century and defining of the Engineer of the Future is but one instance of the new ways of thinking that she brought to UW; along with supporting entrepreneurship and teaching innovations. In many ways her initiatives will continue to shape the experiences of thousands of future students. Pearl will be remembered as a unique point of inflection and reflection in the history of UW and the Faculty of Engineering.
My most cherished recollection was her speech at the inauguration of Ethel's Garden. Her words confirmed my intuitions that here was a gifted leader, inspired from within and uplifting to all those who knew her. Pearl was one that had the rare ability to kindle hearts to valour, and unite people in ways that transcend individual interests. She understood that intellectual accomplishments are tributary to the greater imperatives of a life well-lived, that will continue to enrich and empower many. Hers was an extraordinary life. Pearl has not passed into memory, so much as she has passed into legend. We are all the better for having known her and we will always remember her with reverence.
