Obituary of Helen Theresa Palach

(nee Walter)

Helen passed away peacefully at her home in Waterloo on Sunday, December 6, 2020, at the age of 98 years.

Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband of 69 years, Walter Palach, on September 3, 2017; sons, Edward John (in infancy), Anthony James (August, 2017) and Randal Francis (July, 2020); parents, Edward and Margaret (nee Baessler) Walter; brothers, Willard Walter and Frank Walter (Beatrice); and sisters, Edna Zinger (Leonard) and Gertrude Scherrer.

Helen will be sadly missed by her children, John (Donna) Palach, Bonnie (Eric) Rajcak, Susie Palach (Cindy Collins); daughters-in-law, Jolanda Palach and Catherine Palach; and by her many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Helen is also survived by her brother-in-law, Jim Scherrer.

Helen was born on April 23, 1922 in Peel Township, Ontario. She was a member of St. Agnes RC Church in Waterloo and a member of the Catholic Women’s League for 78 years. Helen’s family extends a special thank you to Father Aleks Mazur of St. Agnes Parish.

Helen was a powerful matriarch to a full family; her door was never locked, and when in her comforting presence, all personal worries seemed to disappear. She was an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind woman who left a strong impact on everyone she met. Her smile and presence immediately lit up a room, her sense of style receiving praise for her unique ability to always colour-coordinate her runners with her purses, and how her love of cooking kept us all happy around the kitchen table. In the words of Emily Dickinson, “Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality.” Helen has now joined the party on the other side, waltzing the night away with the love of her life, Wally.

As per Helen’s wishes, a private family service will be held, followed by cremation.
