Margot Ullman

Obituary of Margot Johanna Ullman

Margot died peacefully at Saint Luke’s Place, Cambridge, on Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at the age of 93.

Predeceased in 2014 by Werner, her loving husband for over 63 years, and in 2009 by her youngest son Herbert.  Survived by son Manfred, daughter Doris Hindrichs (Peter), and brother Heinz Schramowsky.  Also predeceased by sister Eva Eisenloeffel, in 2014.  “Oma” will be dearly missed by her four grandchildren, Heidi and Nina Hindrichs, and Kristen and Alex Ullman, and by her nephew John Eisenloeffel (Gudrun).

Margot was a joyful individual, who as a young woman maintained her positive outlook through war and refugee displacement in Europe, and then starting a new life in Canada with her husband and two young children.

She was also a proud woman. Though the family lived in relative poverty for the first 8 years, she held her head high and was resourceful with the little they had.  Everything was homemade; she put a simple but delicious hot meal on the table every day, and with her sewing and mending skills made sure the family was always well dressed, especially on Sundays. More importantly though, she created a home that was rich with love and belonging and purpose.

Margot had a classy side to her as well, that finally found expression as the family became more financially established.  She was a star of the silver screen at heart, wearing her pearls and diamonds with perfectly styled hair while doing housework, and always an elegant hat and gloves when travelling or out shopping. Along with Werner, she also became an excellent ballroom dancer.

But without question, she was happiest when caring for her family. She was a tireless babysitter, a first-rate seamstress, and an avid gardener. Food, however, was her secret weapon. Anyone who walked into her house could not escape being offered home cooked German delicacies, and a choice of at least three different freshly baked goods. Saying “no thank you” was not an option in Margot’s kitchen!!
