I remember so fondly both Verna and Delton from the beginning of my teaching at WLS (1975-2008) but especially in the early years, when Deborah (age 12 at first) baby-sat our boys. Although Delton and I had a rough & tumble relationship, he became a second father to me over the years. Given the "bigger than life" presence of Delton, one might tend to forget Verna or fall back on the TRADITIONAL woman behind the man. But for me Verna was a grounding presence in that whirlwind entry office where she managed to help me ground myself when I would go to the entry window like a whirling dervish. It was the Verna-Mavis team that helped me even more than my academic colleagues feel that I belonged. Behind the quiet exterior I discovered a warm caring human being with a sparkling human touch noticeable in her wry smile. So to you Verna, good-bye for now, & when you're reunited with Delton, give him a swift kick for me followed by a hug.
I love you both, Oz

Every day when I visited my father, Louis Koppeser, at the Sunshine Centre, I would encounter Verna taking one of her long walks around the ground floor of the main building. We often spent time chatting, and when my dad and I had coffee and cookies together at the coffee centre in the Sunshine Centre, we would ask Verna to join us. Her company was a pleasure, and she and my dad had lots in common, both being about the same age and having a Lutheran background. I hadn't seen her for awhile and wondered where she was. I was very sad to learn that she had passed away. I will really miss seeing this very lovely woman. Jo Ann Struck

I will always cherish the visits with Verna and Delton. They made you feel at home, they loved to listen and people appreciated their their wisdom. Kind, compassionate, authentic, honest, and faithful are words that come to mind for Verna (and there are so many more). My condolences to her family, to the people of Mt. Zion, and to all who knew and loved her. She was an amazing woman.

It was my great privilege to work alongside Verna as one of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary's support staff. We had some wonderful years together at WLS and I admired her calm strength and ability to get things done efficiently and accurately (like those yearly hand-produced grade charts tracking every enrolled student). She had a real eye for detail. There was also a fun side to Verna. I remember one Hallowe'en where we staff dressed up in costumes. Verna showed up with black ears, whiskers, a black top and trousers and sporting black sunglasses. No tail though as she was, Verna said, one of the three blind mice. I knew too, above all else, Verna's focus was on the well-being of each member of her family. I count myself lucky to have known her. May her memory be a blessing.

I was so sorry to hear about your mom Your parents were both such amazing people. Your mom was the epitome of quiet confidence and grace. She always had a friendly, thoughtful comment and a smile. My parents and my sister and I were honored to be your neighbours for 50+ years. Miss you all and thinking of you.

I'm sure that Verna's whole family has heard this story, but now I get to tell it one more time.
When I was about 3 or 4, Delton and Verna lived on the second floor of our house. It was nearing exam time for Delton, but I was absorbed in playing a certain record over and over on my new record player. . . very loudly. One day, my father told me that my record player was broken and couldn't be fixed for a couple of weeks.
Delton wrote his exams and my record player was suddenly fixed.
I am smiling at that memory of Verna and Delton. I will always remember it.

Our thoughts are with you in this difficult time. We wanted to share that we have so many warm, happy memories at Mount Zion with the Delton, Verna and the whole family. Verna was always so warm and welcoming and quick to laugh, even when we arrived late on Sunday's (a regular thing for our family, alas). They will be missed. Virtual hugs from us all, the Granskous
