I was very saddened to hear of Ed's passing. I did not know him personally but over the years I did attend several math workshops led by him. He was a wonderful educator: friendly, positive, knowledgeable and encouraging. The education community has lost a great teacher.

After much thought, I still can’t come up with the best words to express my sadness and sympathy for Edward’s family. Over the years, my husband and I had such good times with Walter, Hilda, Edward and Peter in their early years sharing a great family vacation in Honey Harbour and Christmas Eves in their home in Harrow as well as some tomfoolery. You are in my heart friends.

Not sure what to say. Although we have not communicated for years I have always considered Ed to be a good friend and more importantly a GREAT person. When I look back at some of the best moments of my life a number of them, not unexpectedly, involved Ed. He has no idea of the impact that he had on my life as well as the many others who have had the privilege of knowing him. As a person of faith I do believe with all my heart we will see each other again in heaven.

I cannot remember the exact time I met Ed, however, from that time forward we were friends for life. Walter, Hilda, Edward, and Peter were living on King Street next to the Hammonds. Daily sports and outside activities were the routine each day, capped off with a drink and a delicious treat that Hilda would have made. Soon after they moved to Walnut Street. The new house had a long driveway that accommodated various sporting activities, but hockey was a must and an obsession. We would play hockey for hours on end, with the occasional basketball game to follow. The Enns’ place was the official hangout for the neighbourhood and it was definitely my second home.
Ed always did well at school, and he had no fear of public speaking. He was always in the finals of the Legion public speaking contest, I remember.
High school brought a change for all of us, as Ed chose to go to high school at UMEI in Leamington, rather than to our small high school in Harrow. Although we weren’t able to spend as much time together, Ed would always invite me to the various events that were held in Leamington. Grade 13 brought him back to Harrow, and it was like he had never left. We were all so glad to have him back, and I have so many great memories of that year. Ed continued his education out of town while I went to university in Windsor, but I was again invited various times to hang out with his friends in Waterloo, as well as in Toronto when he was completing his teaching degree.
I was proud to stand as a groomsman in Ed’s first wedding, and to have him stand as my Best Man in mine. Unfortunately, careers and family commitments limited our visits over the last few years. I regret that we weren’t able to connect as much, but when I did see him, it was like we were kids back on Walnut Street and no time had passed.
You will be missed, my friend.

I knew Ed both as a colleague with the Ministry of Education Math Team and Primary and Junior Math Expert Panels, a student (I was his M.Ed. advisor, and a friend (we would meet for lunch at various restaurants halfway between our homes, sometimes at places Ed suggested that turned out to be closed :) ) I found him to be an amazing mathematical thinker, and an incredibly caring math educator. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing, but know that his struggle with cancer had been a very long and difficult one for him and his family. My deepest condolences to his wife and family. I met Ed in my first year of university when he lived across the hall from me in the dorms at Conrad Grebel. Being from the US, I had nowhere to go for Thanksgiving that first year. Ed took pity on me and invited me to spend Thanksgiving with his family in his hometown of Harrow. That’s the kind of guy Ed was (friendly, funny, down to earth, and enjoyed life).
He introduced me to his friends and we spent a few evenings partying at the Harrow Hotel (more of a dive bar than a hotel). I remember having a lot of fun with Ed in those university days, and I will always look back fondly at that time.
My condolences to Ed’s family. I am sorry for your loss.

I worked with Ed in the Math Consultant phase of his career. He was the one that said to me, "If you can multiply by 2 and 5 then you can multiply ANY number." I naively thought, "No way!" Then out came the strategies and he BLEW my mind! I use this idea with ALL my classes and share it with colleagues. He will be sadly missed by all those who he helped in his rolls at the WRDSB.

I got to know Edward when he came back to Harrow High for grade 13. I had only moved to Harrow for high school, so I wasn't privileged to have stories of Ed from his younger days, though I have since heard many. Ed sat near me in English and in Calculus, and I was immediately struck by how funny he was. His one liners (often said under his breath but intentionally loud enough for all to hear) showed both his comedic timing and his well-crafted sense of irony. Ed had a great laugh himself, too; he'd kind of hunch over and chuckle -- and his shoulders would shake. I can still see him doing it when I close my eyes.
My husband Michael and I were blessed to have Eddie stand as our best man at our wedding, and that same sense of humour and comedic timing was on display for everyone to hear. His speeches were the talk of the wedding, even years later, and I'm so grateful we have them. He was such a good guy -- so bright and kind, and such a people-person. He will be well and truly missed.
