I no longer live in the KW area, and have only just learned of Dorothy's passing - my condolences to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
I met Dorothy in 1984 when I was 15 years old; my father had stayed with her for several months when taking up his role as a Sergeant with the Kitchener OPP, and my mother and their two youngest children (my brother and I) arrived that summer. Even as a bratty teenager, Dorothy's wit and warmth touched me. Dorothy seemed to really care about my answers when she spoke to me, and I will always, ALWAYS, remember her offering me advice that carried me through my performance career: "Yes, you can sing. But you will need to be stronger - stronger than the rest - to be heard." She was a most remarkable woman.
Goodnight, Dorothy - God Bless.

So sorry to learn about the passing of Dorothy. I only now got the sad news via Paul Gingrich. I didn't know her personally but everything I have heard and read about her made it clear that Dorothy was a truly exceptional person who gave of herself so generously and selflessly. I'm sure she will be missed by so many people who had the privilege of knowing her. My deepest sympathy goes to the entire family and everyone else who was in Dorothy's circle.

In the summer of 1969 my parents went to Israel for several weeks and all of the Johnson kids were farmed out to families from First Mennonite. I had the great pleasure of staying with the Hallman family. I remember that vividly, even after all these years. I have such happy memories of that summer, and of all the other interactions I had with your family over the years. I have lost touch with Tom, who is close to my age, and I hope you are well. But I remember all the rest of you so well too. One other thing - in 1990 when Carol and I returned from Africa with MCC we visited Kitchener and spoke at church. We were expecting our first child. Dorothy gave us a very generous gift for the baby and we were so touched by her kindness. I am so sorry for your loss, but I know you are all blessed with many happy memories of your dear mother. Blessings to you all. If you are ever in Philadelphia I hope you will look me up.

I have great memories of the Hallman family. Your mom was a wonderful friend to my mom Sylvia Gascho . They were both avid scrabble players and Dorothy would drive to Cambridge after mom moved to Fairview retirement home just to have a game or two. The “club girls” were a very important part of our lives.I remember one Christmas when my husband and I crashed a club Christmas party at Dorothy’s as Mr. and Mrs Santa your mom and I had a wonderful chat this Christmas and I was thankful for that time with her,
Your mom was the last in a long line of special mothers’ and friends.
Love MaryAnne

Sorry for your loss, Dorothy was a long time friend of our mom Eileen Beirnes. They worked together at the shirt factory and became close friends. They stayed in touch with each other and celebrated lives and birthdays, visits to the cottage. Playing scrabble, puzzles, and cooking great meals for each other. We have known Dorothy most of our lives and we are not surprised that she stayed in her home all that time. Our deepest sympathy to you and all the family. She was one amazing lady.

I worked with Dorothy in the hospital gift shop. I was a special education teacher with the public board. Your mother
would knit mittens which I always had in my pockets when I was on yard duty. There were always childrenwho had no mittens and
and would appreciate receiving a pair. This is just one example of her kindness.

A wonderful, strong and industrious woman! Dorothy was a longtime friend of my mother Charlea Snyder and all the other 'girls' of the Club. They met on Tuesday evenings twice a month for fifty years or more, supporting each other as mothers and wives and friends. I enjoyed seeing Dorothy's interactions as a child growing up and certainly even more so as an adult. Susan, you have been a stalwart life-long friend for me and I am so thankful for the time that I was able to spend with the Hallman family and with Dorothy specifically in these last years. I was always up for a game of Scrabble after a delicious Sunday dinner! Who could match her pies and butter tarts... Dorothy will be sorely missed, but what an example for tackling life head on!
