Obituary of Gwendolyn "Gwen" Smith

With sadness we wish to inform that Gwen suffered a stroke and fought to hang on until her boys could be by her side. She passed away with her sons Keith and Paul holding her close.

Gwen is survived by her amazing dear sister Barbara, her two sons Paul (Sheilagh), Keith, Grandson Adam (Michelle), Granddaughters Jessica (Adam) and Chaeli. Predeceased by daughter Leslie and husband Gerald.

Gwen and Gerry had a wonderful life together spending many years traveling to Florida to enjoy a warmer winter with friends. She was not blessed with a normal healthy family but never felt sorry for herself. She was always encouraging and finding the reasons for optimism. Gwen always said it is an ill wind that doesn’t blow some good. She had a good, healthy life, living independently until the end.

A big thank you to the staff and residents of Waterloo Heights Independent Living Home. Your care and compassion will never be forgotten. There was nowhere else that Mom wanted to be. Gwen had deep roots in the Kitchener area with her Great Grandfather being a Mayor of Berlin, prior to the change to Kitchener. She spent 5 years away from her Father Fred Bingham as he served in the Second World War. A hardship that is difficult to imagine. Gwen was a strong woman who had a life full of wonderful friends and family. She lived with class and strength.

Cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo.

There will not be a service but please remember Gwen in your prayers. She made it clear that she was ready to join Leslie and Dad. She is at peace.

Condolences for the family and donations to Canadian Arthritis Society may be arranged through the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
