David "Dave" Thomson

Obituary of David "Dave" Thomson

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Dave Thomson in his 48th year on February 28, 2021 – leaving us too young.

Loving partner and best friend of Jodi Spall for 30 years (22 years married). Proud, cherished, and loving father of Jack Thomson and Dylan Thomson; and loving brother to John Thomson and sister-in-law Rebecca Winterer of San Francisco, CA. Dave will also be lovingly remembered by his brother-in-law Kevin Spall (Kathy Motton) and their children Annabelle and Oliver, parents-in-law Bill and Heather Spall, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins across Canada and the US. Predeceased recently by his parents Jay and Shirley (nee McCann) Thomson.

Born in Ames, Iowa, Dave was a dual citizen settling in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. Locally he attended WCI where he was valedictorian of the Class of 1991, before graduating from the Mechanical Engineering program at the University of Waterloo (Class of 1996). As a Professional Engineer, Dave founded Postability in 2008, a bespoke software firm customizing Mastercam CAD/CAM systems, used for computer control of machine tools. Over the last 12+ years, Dave oversaw the growth of Postability into a global presence with a team of 10 employees.

Dave’s unlimited curiosity, sense of community and empathy were contagious. He was a human search engine, sharing profound facts about everything and anything. Annual canoe trips with buddies and weekly hikes with Jodi and June Bug, their French Bulldog, reflected his love of nature. Dave indulged his passion for music by playing drums and guitar during monthly jam sessions with friends. Dave could also be found on the ice – recently as an ‘old timers’ hockey player, and formerly as a Kitchener Minor Hockey Association volunteer coach (10 years in House and Rep leagues). Dave had a deep love of cooking and mixology. There was no greater joy than sharing a fine cocktail, a homemade meal, or a slice of his sourdough bread with family and friends. We are grateful for Dave’s passions and curiosity and are truly saddened that he left us at his peak – a successful and respected business owner, devoted husband, amazing father, brother, son-in-law, and friend. It will be a struggle to understand and accept his premature death.

Special thanks to the Bluewater Health and Fire Fighter Teams for their care of Dave, and to the Postability team for their strength and resilience in keeping the business moving forward.
