(nee Stevens)

Peggy passed away peacefully at her daughter’s residence in Elmira, on Thursday, March 11, 2021, in her 100th year.

Beloved wife of the late Mervyn (2003); dearly loved mother of Linda Welker and her husband Gary of Elmira, Richard Nodder and his wife Julia of Drumheller, Alberta and Nancy Conrad and her husband George Styles of Ancaster.

Loving grandmother of Andrew (Sue), Michael (Paige), Lisa Hicknell (Rob), Christina Robinson (Mike), Wanda Ryan (Barrett), Sarah (Kevin) and Stephanie (Charlie).

Proud Nonna to Abigail, Gabriel and Poppy Hicknell; special GG to Eva and Nora Bialkowski and Grayden Robinson.

Lovingly remembered by her sister, Joyce Wilkinson, of Picton. Predeceased by brother Clifford Stevens, sister-in-law Velva Stevens and brother-in-law Neil Wilkinson.

Born in Toronto in 1921, Peggy lived a full life that included interesting careers, adventurous travel and valued friendships. With a sharp mind right to the end, she could always be counted upon to recall the specific dates, details and family members involved in past events.

Peggy and Merv were Charter members of Parkminster United Church in Waterloo where she was actively involved in the UCW, Sunday School program and Couples Club. She appreciated the ability to reconnect with Parkminster’s services and ministry of music via Zoom over this past year.

She was a volunteer for many years at the Freeport Hospital gift shop.

Peggy loved a beautiful garden, a gin in the afternoon, and spending time each summer at Joyce and Neil’s home in Prince Edward County. A skilled seamstress and knitter, Peggy’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were regularly on the receiving end of beautiful dresses, quilts, sweaters and knitted socks, among other treasures. At family gatherings, her grandchildren looked forward to her famous “greenies,” making one pan with walnuts and one without to accommodate their differing tastes.

Learning technology while a resident at The Westhill, Waterloo, and getting an iPad at age 95 gave Peggy the chance to stay connected with family and friends through Facebook and video chats, do word puzzles, play euchre online, watch Netflix and read library books. A highlight was a 4-generation family video call at Christmas, with her family living around the world.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Grant who was her primary caregiver for many years, the LHIN Waterloo-Wellington and palliative care team. The compassion and care of the PSW and nursing teams is very much appreciated.

The funeral service will be held at Parkminster United Church, 275 Erb St. E., Waterloo on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Heather Power officiating.
