Terry and I send you our heartfelt condolences. Both of us liked and respected your Mother. My fondest memory of Laura is when she and Jenny travelled to Morocco together with me. I liked her easy going attitude, always a smile and we enjoyed each other's company. I know you will all miss her.

What a beautiful service and tribute to Laura! I have fond memories of being neighbours to the Shantz family across the street at 28 Albert St., St. Jacobs. My mother-in-law, Anna Shantz played many Scrabble games with Florence and Laura through the years and the "minimum standard of play of the combined score of 600 points" was also a house rule adopted in our family. Laura, Anna & I enjoyed several games in recent years on our front porch. My deepest sympathies to your family!

Hello to all of Laura's family
I have wonderful memories of Laura (and Milo) way back in my growing up years at Preston Mennonite Church. I remember Laura's beautiful alto voice, her piano playing, her leading of choirs and MYF sponsoring, her smile and hearty laugh, and her love of God and others. She was always involved and also was an encouragement to me in my love of music.
May God be with you all as you say your goodbyes today. I plan to join you online - to celebrate a life well lived.
Blessings and prayers

My sincere condolences to you all but take comfort in the knowledge that your Mother lived a wonderful, giving life and shared many joys with you and others. God Bless, Gay Dunlop

“‘Schwester,’ I think it’s time for a walk on the Mill Race.” Those words were like music to my ears when I would meet Laura during an intermission at Centre in the Square or in the front lobby of a church. Her low alto voice is silent in the earthly choir but still audible in my mind’s ear. Memories of her gently offered down-to-earth wisdom remain as guides along the journey, and her steady, always broadening, and at the last accepting faith shine like a beacon for those who follow. Thanks be for the life and legacy of your mother, grandma, sister, and friend! My condolences to you all!

I will always have fond memories of Mrs Laura Shantz and her family. I lived with her family in the mid 1970s and this is my lifetime treasure. Without that experience I would not have been able to live in Melbourne from 1982. The thoughts of my husband, Alan Davidson, and myself are with the whole family.

We shared a number of oversea’s trips together over the years all very pleasant. Laura’s hospitality was generously shared on stays at Sunny Breeze Florida. Her hearty laugh will be remembered while playing games at Chesley Lake and other times. Laura brought music to the Shantz family which we will forever be thankful for.

Lovely obituary and tribute to your mom. I know it's been a journey with some struggles at the end, but she bore this with grace. It was nice to see her participate on the Waterloo North Sunday School zoom a few weeks ago. She played piano at church until a few years ago and was always engaged and active. It's too bad we can't gather together to honour her life and impact but accept our thoughts and prayers.

Laura brought definition to the terms neighbor and good! She treasured her grandchildren and children; she had a sharp memory of all things related to St Jacobs, which she expressed with gentle candor, and honor for the village and its people. She was wise and playful, but also honest. We came to treasure Laura! In her words, "yes, we found each other and were the better for it"! She competed hard at Scrabble and cards, (she didn't mind winning, but in her own quiet and humble way!), loved a glass of good white wine, the Raptors and tennis. We will always cherish those 16 years together at 28 Albert and 46 and 48 Spring Street in St Jacobs!
Laura's legacy? Wang Weifan (Lilies of the Field c 1988) describes the Laura we knew and treasure:
"Consider the lilies of the field...the beauty of life does not lie in what we put on, but in bearing life's hardships without losing sight of its charm, in encountering the vagaries of the world without losing sight of its beauty. The adornments which the Father gives to his daughters and sons are carved and painted in the deepest recesses of the soul. The tiny flowers of the field ask nothing for themselves and covet nothing. They are silent, but in their silence, they adorn the field. Their lives are brief; they appear quickly, go quickly. Yet their conscience is clear and they leave behind their fragrance to the land that nourished them".
Laura leaves in her wake a warmth of memory, a certain fragrance which nurtured.

I always so appreciated my interactions with Laura. I found her dry sense of humour and pragmatic and generous spirit grounding and inspiring. I especially remember many hours spent with Laura and the rest of the Shantz family keeping vigil with my nephew and her grandson Adam. I also remember many more hours spent laughing together with her as we watched my nephews and her grandsons Tim, Nate and Marty grow from smiling, mischievous little ones into engaged, caring young people. I think they've all inherited some of their Grandma Shantz's great sense of humour and generous spirit!
Laura was loved by many and will be greatly missed. I am honoured to share a name with such an amazing woman.
My thoughts and prayers are with Marcus, Lisa, Tim, Nate and Marty and the rest of the Shantz crew.
Much Love,
Laura Shantz

Laura’s love for and understanding of music was one of the ways in which she made her light shine. This includes active participation in choirs as well as blessing us with supremely musical piano playing at Waterloo North Mennonite Church. Thank you, Laura! We miss you here, but cherish the memories.

From an early age, Mrs Shantz was like a mother to me.
From making ‘Popeyes’ for lunch to allowing Chris & I to play hours of UNO &/or pool, she always treated me like one of her own. I can hear her laugh-snort right now! I will miss her.
