It is with saddened hearts that we announce Ewald’s passing on Wednesday, March 31st, 2021 in his 95th year. Ewald was the loving husband to the late Helen Kliewer (Warkentin).  He will be sadly missed by his children and their spouses:  Mary (Doug) Mohun, Hildy (John) Pinkney, Karl Kliewer and (Lisa de Lima).  Opa will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Jeremy (Jennifer), Joe (Stephanie), Kristy and Rhys (Melissa), and by his great grandchildren Allison, Jackson, Nolan, and Evelynn.  His life started in the Ukraine but at a young age was forced to flee, with his mother and siblings, to avoid the oncoming war. In Germany he was hired in a wood working facility, where the owner soon found out that he was a quick learner and very dependable.  After the war ended, Ewald and his family, with the help of the Mennonite Central Committee, emigrated to Paraguay. There he met his future wife, Helen, and started his own family. Not long after, they emigrated to Canada where their family grew with the addition of 2 more children, Hildy and Karl. Here, he put his wood working skills to use, working for Canada Cabinets for over 30 years. His talents were also proven in his gardens, whether it be flowering plants, shade trees, grape vines, and vegetables alike. Most of all, he valued being with his siblings, his cousins, and their families. Ewald often said that Canada was a wonderful country and remarked on how fortunate we are to live here.

Many thanks to the staff at Freeport Hospital while he was in palliative care and thanks also to the staff at Grand River Hospital for their kind support and care of our Dad during his stay.  We would especially like to thank the staff at Parkwood Mennonite Home for their ongoing concern for Dad’s health and safety during the four years of his enjoyable life there.
