I taught with Dave Mathies for many years at Jarvis Collegiate in Toronto. He was an extremely popular and successful teacher. Many of his students would later go on to graduate from Ontario universities in science and engineering. He will be well remembered. Harvey Medland

I would like say that Dave was the best brother-in-law a person could ever have! My daughter, Becki, and I so enjoyed coming up to Canada to visit Ginny and Dave - they always treated us to the best visits! Our last visit was 2 years ago and CoVid certainly stopped us from being there at this time! One funny memory was when Dave wanted me to try mussels at one of his favorite restaurants - it did not go well and I never had them again! We laughed so much over the years! A great guy who will be missed by so many!

Dear Ginny
Margaret and I are deeply saddened to hear of Dave's passing. I treasure my memories of Dave. I fondly recall working with Dave at the University of Waterloo and then teaching together at Jarvis Collegiate. Dave and I also had many good times when we shared a house in the late sixties. Margaret and I enjoyed getting together with you and Dave during our retirement years.
We have nothing but sweet memories of our time with Dave.
Margaret and Doug Dalgetty

Mr. Mathies used to live in a bungalow on Avenue Road at the end of Oxton Ave. just south of Chaplin Cres. I used to see his orange Porsche 911 in his driveway every time I went home from university and then work. It suddenly disappeared. I enquired and was told he had died. Every time I went by for the next 50-odd years, I would see that house and think about him. Luckily, the rumour wasn’t true. He was alive and well and living in Waterloo! Great guy/ great teacher. He inspired me to take Engineering Science at UofT -- and I enjoyed the physics courses most of all. Oliver Bertin Jarvis '67

Dear Ginny I am very saddened by the loss of your husband Dave with whom I taught my first few years at Jarvis. He was a model of professionalism and enthusiasm for his teaching and his example helped me to better more own teaching practice. The last few times that Karem and I spent with you and him also increased my appreciation of his fortitude in the face of his condition. He will be remembered with great affection and respect.
