Obituary of Katharina Schmidt
Katharina "Katie" Schmidt (née Stoetzer)
December 6, 1926 - May 22, 2021
Katie passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of May 22nd at the age of 94, at Chartwell the Westmount long-term care home in Kitchener, her home for the past several years.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 51 years, Johann Schmidt, and her brother, Adam Stoetzer of Germany.
She will forever be lovingly remembered and very much missed by her daughter, Renate (Amr El Sombati), her granddaughters, Melissa "Missy" (Magdi Elsayed) and Tamara "Tami", and her great-granddaughter, Mia Katharina, her nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews with their families in Germany, as well as all extended family and friends.
Many thanks to our wonderful Chartwell family and their caring staff. Special thanks to Dr. Kugler, all the great Pioneer staff who always went above and beyond, with particular mention to the nurses Bibi and Jen, PSWs Althea, Shirley and Emma, and the rec facilitator, Lily, who brought her so much joy and kindness in these turbulent times.
After WW II, Katie was repatriated to Germany as an ethnic German from the former Yugoslavia. She immigrated to Canada with her husband and daughter in 1957, and settled in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. A highly skilled seamstress, she worked many years in bridal wear in this area. She was an avid reader, loved to dance and party, and baked fabulous cakes and pastries, but found her greatest joy in her granddaughters and great-granddaughter.
Katie has inspired three generations of strong women, and was a constant source of love, humour and motivation. Oma will be dearly missed and will continue to live on in the hearts of her remaining family members.
As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington by contacting the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, Waterloo at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
