Dear Mara and Meghan,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I hope you have many memories to hold close in these difficult times. Al made such a powerful impact on me as a young teacher... I was scared of him for about a year (lol) and then realized what a great ally and supporter he would become. Later, he used to walk by my house with Otis when I briefly lived on Redfox Road and would puff his cigar and chat with me. In the past few years, he has done a little bit of supply work at Bluevale, where I currently work. He made it a point to check in on me every time he was there. I am a pretty easy to tease person, so there we definitely laughed often!!!
I can't imagine this loss. Meghan, we have never met but I know all about you... your dad was SO proud. I am thinking of you and your Mom and wishing you all the best.

Sorry to hear about Al, I remember playing football with Al at KCI and quite often we would walk home together after practices as he lived a couple of streets over from us. And yes Al was intense, he always put his all into everything he did and I was pleased to see that he followed that all his life. Randy It is such a loss to lose your spouse at such a young age and I can't imagine how hard that is, but I am sure that family and friends will be there for you during this time. Take care Sylvia

My deepest sympathy to you all. I smiled reading all of the comments about the "teddy bear with the rough exterior" and fondly remembered a picture from your wedding rehearsal party where 6-year old me was scared to have my picture taken with him without my mother--he always seemed larger than life, but with a heart of gold. You are all in my thoughts.

Marlene &Family; I am so saddened to read of Al's passing.
I knew Al at Waterloo on and off the football field. Al was a fierce competitor in all the team sports he played - not for himself but for the team and his team mates. He was a true friend of all of us who played sports with him! His passing has had a difficult effect on all of us as his memory is circulating very quickly amongst all his friends. His obituary demonstrates a powerful legacy as all of us who knew Al would expect however most of all his family is Al's greatest legacy, his grand children, and his students will remember Al fondly forever, as we do!!

I was privileged to teach with Al at Lutherwood on Benjamin Road, Waterloo in 1974 to 1975. He was a superb staff member and so well liked and respected by all the staff and our students. Pastor Meibohm made a great choice in hiring Al. We touched base after that year from time to time. I was pleased that he joined the school, KCI, where I started my teaching career. I always valued that time and friendship with Al. My prayers go to all the family. Al, you lived and truly good life.

So sorry about Al, Marlene. I remember him as a larger than life character with a heart to match. I saw little of him in later years but forever seared in my memory is a large figure wearing a Joe Namath size fur coat and a large brimmed hat walking into a crowded Barn to watch the hockey Warriors. Heads would turn ...... and continued to do so but in many different ways as he enriched our community throughout his life.
Consider yourself hugged,

Dear Mar and Meghan, coaching with Al with the KW Lightning will be one of the highlights and impactful times of my life. He inspired me to become more confident as a coach and more importantly as a person. Al called our coaching duo, Beauty and the Beast always referring to me as the Beauty - the truth of it was, Al was the Beauty both inside and out!!!! He had a heart of gold and truly cared for the girls he coached. Al is someone who positively influenced so many but did so modestly. I feel so honored to have know Al and want to send my heartfelt condolences to the family.

The first time I met Al was in 1963 when St.Jerome's played KCI in Midget Basketball and over the decades we played and coached against each other many times. He was a tough competitor - Al loved the 'battle', but when the game was over he was always gracious - win or lose. His players loved him and he brought out the best in them, I know this because he coached my daughter Amanda and my nephew Luke. Al was caring, committed and a credit to the coaching / teaching profession as he impacted the lives of so many.
My condolences to Marlene, Meghan and Family.

Mr. Haehn (Coach Haehn, to me) played a foundational role in my life throughout my high school years. I always had the idea in my head that I would return to Waterloo and meet up with him, thanking him for encouraging me to strive for the best on the court, in the classroom, and in my life as a whole. Also, for reminding me to inject the value of passion into everything I do.
I have thought about him a lot over the years, often with a smirk, thinking of the sometimes grumpy character he would portray, knowing full well that a kind-hearted, caring, supportive role model stood before me. I cherish the years spent with Mr. Haehn and I will never, ever forget him. Condolences to Marlene and Meghan and the remainder of the family during this difficult time.
P.S. Coach, thanks for pulling me out of football tryouts by my ear, so that I wouldn't get hurt for our championship basketball season. You're in my heart.
