Dear Bast family. As you gather thisafternoon to celebrate the remarkable life of Miriam find comfort knowing it was a life full of love, charity, kindness and unselfishness. I had the honor of working with Miriam for many years. Many of my patients are alive today because they were her “boys”. She guided many through the dark days of HIV with kindness and support and was there for them when many felt alone.
Personally she helped shape my career in HIV medicine, introducing me to many colleagues at conferences and guiding my involvement into community groups.
She was fun, kind hearted and more than once managed to get into a little trouble when at conferences. My partner Bryen could tell you stories.
Miriam: For a life well lived your eternal resting place in heaven waits with the other angels.
Bast family: Give thanks she achieved so much in such a short time and may you be spared any further sorrow.
Gary Rubin MD and Bryen Daly

Miriam truly exemplified the character of a Christian woman. Her quiet confidence and disposition were lovely reflections of her faith in God and her love of people. She was always so very thoughtful of others even though she faced major challenges and pain. I learned that a visit to her in the hospital with plans to encourage Miriam, became an opportunity for her to encourage me. She was always graceful and appreciative of any kindness. Our last time together included a drive of several hours for an important appointment. Sitting in a car for a long period of time was definitely not the most comfortable thing. Miriam's only concern was for our comfort. My husband, Richard and I thank the Lord for the privilege of knowing Miriam and being blessed by her gentle spirit. We will continue to pray for Mel, Cathy and the family.

Miriam was a childhood friend ! We went to the same church. Our paths separated but we reconnected several years ago through family and Words with friends! She was an unbeatable opponent; and actually reading her life’s story made me realize that challenges were her specially and she thrived in them! I will see you again Miriam! Peace for the family

My condolences to Mel and Cathy and all the Bast family.
I am saddened that Miriam has gone but happy she is now with her Lord and her family who have gone on before, and no longer in pain or suffering.
Miriam and I frequently chatted together by facetime or phone, talking about our lives, our families, laughing, encouraging each other.
I miss Miriam already, not being able to call and hear her voice anymore, but I know one day I will see her again in glory and we will pick up right where we left off.

My dear cousin Miriam has left this world but is in a far better place now. She loved to care for people. In 1964 as a teenager she came to our home to care for me and my siblings when our Mom was in hospital. So many precious memories I have of her and someday we will be together again. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
