Passed away at Clair Hills Retirement Residence, Waterloo on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at the age of 100.
Loving mother of Joan (John) Forester, Gerald (Cheryl) Herbst and Pat (Peter) Murphy. Cherished grandmother of Hal Thornton and Jeffrey Thornton; great-grandmother of Gregory and Benjamin and great-great grandmother of Shaun, Wesley and Kevin. Will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
Helene was the last surviving member of the Schmidt and Herbst family. Predeceased by her husband Allen Herbst (1977) and grandson Jonathan Thornton (1988). Sister of Kathleen (Carl) Koebel, Audrey (Gerry) Brown, and Arthur (Nora) Schmidt; sister-in-law of Carl (Ruth) Herbst, Sadie (Noah) Brusso, Marie (Milton) Foerster, and Frederick (Pearl) Herbst. Parents Norman and Bertha (nee Holst) Schmidt and parents-in-law Edward and Katherina (nee Grien) Herbst.
Helene was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Kitchener. She was active with the quilting group and her talents were very much appreciated. She volunteered in the kitchen and many church communities. In the early 2000’s, Helene was honoured within a group of many by the City of Kitchener, for her longtime senior volunteer work. Helene was employed in 1939 at John Forsythe Shirt Company, Waterloo and Kitchener and retired at the age of 78. She was a meticulous seamstress and knitter, loved detail, stitch, and seams.

Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Friday, November 26, 2021 from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. The memorial service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Friday, November 26, 2021 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Mark Ehlebracht officiating. A private family interment will be held at Memory Gardens, Breslau at a later date.
