Bill was a great colleague in our department. Although not quite a mentor to me, he was always helpful and thoughtful when I first joined the department - but I did feel we had a personal connection. At some point we exchanged emails regarding Giant Swallowtails (butterfly) in Southern Ontario (I feel that he had a boyish enthusiasm for such things - and I completely share this). I share your loss.

I loved how his colleagues describe Bill as the `classic gentleman scholar`. I was never aware of his professional achievements, because as typical Bill, he certainly was a gentleman and very selfless of such things. Just as similar was the way he spent time looking after his Mother out of town for all that time. That`s the Bill I know, and the time we spent with our dogs at the park.
I know Sasha was there to greet him and reunited, they can play fetch all day and never get tired.
I`ll miss our chats.

My sincere condolences to all the family of Bill Taylor.
I remember Bill as a kind and friendly gentleman who was very generous and understanding. When I moved the Canadian Phycological Culture Centre from the University of Toronto to UW in 2008, Bill was welcoming and supportive with whatever he could do to make the transition successful, including donations of materials from his laboratory. He was always interested in how things were going and how he could help out.
May you rest in peace, Bill. You will be missed by so many.

I had the incredible fortune of being hired by Bill when I was a student at Waterloo. More than thirty years later, I still fondly recall those summers bobbing around in a zodiac together, lab fishing trips, and warm gatherings at Bill and Carol’s home to celebrate his student’s successes. I am forever indebted to Bill for the introduction to field research and for his friendship over the years. My deepest condolences to Carol and family.

I was a student in Bill's lab and when I graduated I moved to England for a few years. I visited Canada with my English partner (who was an avid fly fisherman), trying to convince him we should both move back here. Without hesitation Bill took him fishing. He offered a place in his home to us when we did move here a year later - he was that kind and generous. I'm so very grateful to have had Bill in my life. Beyond any limnology I learned from him, I learned how to treat others kindly and respectfully. He meant so much to so many of us. It's been mentioned before and I agree, "a gentleman scientist" is the perfect description of Bill. You will be so missed.

I would like to offer my condolences to Carol and family and to declare my admiration for Bill. I met Bill in 1972 on the 5th floor of the Ramsay Wright Building at the U of T, while we were getting instructions on how to autoclave medium to grow our common love, the ciliated protozoan, Tetrahymena. We both went on to the U of W, where we had the usual institutional interactions but also 40 years of spontaneous conversations and speculations about ciliates. These expressions of Bill’s broad curiosity and enthusiasm for science always lifted my spirits. His calmness around autoclaves and excitable colleagues and his thoughtful and fair administration of scientists always made the world feel safe.

Bill was my Ph.D. co-supervisor. He offered to help me wind up a crucial field experiment in a river, on a cold and rainy September day. As he was carrying a tray full of samples carefully to shore, he tripped on a rock and began to fall. To preserve the precious samples, Bill -- with grace I did not know he possessed -- laid down full length in the river and gently put down the tray just as his face went into the water. He spent the rest of the day soaked and shivering as we processed the samples he had saved.
Years later, as we fished a salmon river together, he managed another face plant in cold water. When I reminded him of his similar episode at my research site, he said he had completely forgotten it.
That was Bill: helpful and sometimes forgetful supervisor, insightful scientist, mentor, angling companion, and dear friend. Coffee time on the river won't be the same.

Having been a member of a wonderful family for 43 years, by marrying into it, I was blessed to be in Bill’s life. He always brought such warmth and kindness to any time spent in his presence. He patiently answered my questions about our river water, birds, ducks and moose. It was an honour to be invited on one of his many hikes (short walks to him) at the end of his beloved cottage road and hear his humerous stories about fishing on frozen lakes and especially of moose encounters, which I have never been able to have.
We were often invited to carnivore nights at the cottage and enjoyed perfectly barbecued steaks followed by very competitive euchre games, where Carol and I were always a little drunk on wine and constantly told, in the nicest way, to stop gabbing and pay attention to the game. Lots of love and laughter with my favourite Limnologist. I am devastated that he has left us, and left us with a huge hole in our hearts and our lives. Good night my sweet brother-in-law.
