Dear Esther, Dorothy, Joanie and Larry. Hans and I are sending condolences and love to you and all of Albert's family. Hans and I, newly married, came to Hamilton so Hans could study at MacMaster. We were so fortunate to be welcomed into your parents' circle when we attended HMC for that time (1982-86). They invited us to join their supper club and made it so easy for us to become part of the church community. My mom also came to Canada from Ukraine as a refugee after WWII. It was meaningful to share stories with your Dad; of course he had much wise reflection about life. He, and your mom, were so generous in their time, encouragement and friendship. Your mom showed me how to make Paska! I am including her recipe from those years. We only learned of your Dad's death today (March 13) and so missed the service. Is it still available? There is such warmth in my heart when I remember your Dad and Mom... Sending you much love. Deb Kirkpatrick and Hans Schowalter

A memory came that I think illuminates part of Albert's character. As a secondary school teacher in Hamilton in the spring of 1985, I was on strike with the rest of the teachers. Linda and I came to church one Sunday during the strike and before or after service Albert may have asked me how I was doing. I mentioned the strike. I can't remember his exact words but he let me know in a kind way that he did not approve of us striking when school secretaries and caretakers made much less money than we did. Of course we never said strikes were about money. I had no response. I think this illustrates Albert's care and love for those who may not have had a lot of power as well as his fearlessness in speaking up for what he believed was right.

We think of you, his children as you miss him and cherish your memories.
May God give you peace and comfort.

To the family of Albert Willms,
A "giant" of a man has left this earth for a beautiful world that holds mystery, fulfillment and promise. To us Albert was a mentor, a friend, and a steady positive model of living out his faith in practical, thoughtful and cheerful ways. Our 18 years of Welcome Inn leadership and association with Hamilton Mennonite Church were greatly enhanced by the involvement, the encouragement and support of Albert and Betty and their family. Our thoughts and prayers and thanks to the family. Doreen and Hugo Neufeld

To Albert’s Family,
Albert knew the fullness of life and how best to inspire. Our chess games were played with passion reflecting the grit and glow, and the ups and downs of life. Our conversations will be remembered for their soulfulness, so mindful of the eternal vastness in which we wandered.
Rest in peace my brother!

Dear Esther, Dorothy, Joanie, and Larry,
My wife Kristen and I are sending you are love and prayers at this time of loss. Four-five years ago, we sometimes bumped into your dad at Parkwood, sometimes sharing a ride in the elevator with him and his bicycle, during the time Kristen's parents lived there. Each time we were amazed by his energy and joy of life. In 1990, Albert was my MCEC appointed matchmaker, journeying with me as a guide and advocate on finding my next pastor assignment (it was a great fit). Your father was such an encouragement and support in the years that followed, always having a moment to ask about our lives. We remember both your parents with fondness. Heaven's blessings be poured out in full measure, showering you with much love and grace.

One Sunday Adult Education Class (with Steve Schuum as Pastor) we were asked to share our favorite songs. I shared a few. I remember Albert being so enthusiastic and wanting to keep the song going when I shared The Amen Song (sung by Sidney Poitier) via Lilies of the Field (1963). I made and submitted apple jelly for Ancaster Fair Homecraft one year giving the jam to Albert. The jar came back empty (while having lunch at Welcome Inn), Albert said he enjoyed.

Albert, we will miss you. You and Betty were the first people to have us to lunch when we came to HMC in the summer of 1989. We have enjoyed your company, your wit, your friendship and your love for so many years. Being in Book Study together was so enriching for us as you shared your love of literature, and your memories, with the group - I (Janice) learned way more history at book study than I had in school! You always were so supportive of all of our kids, asking them about their lives and activities.
And what a lovely, vibrant family you and Betty raised - a legacy indeed, of amazing children, grandchildren and great grandhildren!
To all of you, Larry and Marilyn, Esther and Dennis, Dorothy and Jim, Joanie, we want you to know how much your dad meant to us. We will miss his hugs, his chats, just him.....
May God keep you and bless you and provide the comfort that you need at this time of mourning such an incredible man.
May your memories be indelible, and may God grant you peace.
With our love,
Chuck and Janice Tomlinson, Chuck, Kami, Jessica and Ashleigh xxoo

He is gone – a poem by David Harkins
You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday
You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love, and go on.
“Every man has two deaths, when he is buried in the ground and the last time someone says his name. In some ways men can be immortal.”―Ernest Hemingway
