Obituary of Marijke (Mary) Meijer
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mary passed away peacefully at Columbia Forest Long Term Care Centre at age 97.
Dear mother to Nico (Vivim), Marg (Gary), Rob (Maribeth), John (Susanne), and David Meijer. Dear Oma to 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Survived by many nieces and nephews in Canada and The Netherlands.
She was predeceased by John (2013), her beloved husband of 63 wonderful years. Also, predeceased by her parents and sisters, Hanny and Truida.
Born in The Netherlands, Mary and John brought their family to Canada in 1953. The family lived in London, St. Thomas, Stratford, Hamilton, and St. Mary’s before settling in Kitchener in 1968. John and Mary built a cottage at Conestoga Lake where the family enjoyed many happy summers together sailing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming and eating fresh fruits and vegetables from their massive gardens. The family often went camping to Killbear and the Pinery parks.
Mary and John travelled frequently to Holland, to both coasts of Canada and many places in between. They enjoyed an active social life as long-time members of the Beaux and Belles square dancing club, the Merry Songsters and volunteering with the Wheeling Squares.
Mary had a passion for volunteering in the community. She received special recognition for her work in Stratford and also for her many years of service at the Sunnyside home in Kitchener.
Special thanks to Dr. Mather and the wonderful staff at Columbia Forest Long Term Care home.
At her request, cremation has taken place. A private family memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
