It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother and grandmother, Elizabeth Genevieve Chaves (nee DeAbreu) on April 27, 2022 at Waterloo Hospice.

Wife to Vernon Chaves and dear mother of Michael (Debbie) and Debbie (Barry). Grandmother to Alexander, Simon, Maia and Zoë. Beloved sister to Frankie (deceased), Theresa, Margaret (deceased), Celene (deceased), Rita and Philomena.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana on July 13, 1940, Elizabeth was the eldest girl among seven children. Elizabeth came to Canada in 1963 and married Vernon Chaves, also of Georgetown, that fall in Toronto. The family lived in Markham for many years.

Elizabeth worked as a bank teller for the Bank of Montreal, a job she loved because it allowed her to help people.

Elizabeth’s life was one of dedication to her family. One of her most remarkable qualities was her capacity to be loving and deeply caring to all those around her. Elizabeth loved all children but none as much as her own. She was a tremendous cook and baker. She had a passion for crafting and fashion. Elizabeth deeply enjoyed gardening and cared for many different plants.

The family would like to thank the exceptional residents, nurses and staff at Sunshine Centre, Luther Village on the Park whose care and compassion for Elizabeth was always apparent.

Visitation will be at Erb & Good Funeral Home in Waterloo on May 2nd from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. A funeral mass will take place at Our Lady Lourdes Catholic Church in Waterloo on Monday May 2nd, at 1 PM. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Thornhill on Wednesday, May 4.
