I worked at Dominion Life when Marta was there and we became good friends. I’ve seen her a number of times over the years. Our last visit was at Parkwood Mennonite Home in December 2019 just after she turned 104. We had a really good chat, reminiscing about people we knew at Dominion Life. Marta spoke of her early years in Russia – stories I’ve heard before, but this time she spoke some in Russian and then did the translation for me. What an amazing woman she was! She always saw humour in difficult situations and was kind beyond words. I’m so grateful that I knew her. Rest in peace, Marta. You were a blessing to so many and will not be forgotten.

I worked with Marta for many years and have nothing but fond memories. I learned so much from her - about work but more importantly about life. She was such a lovely woman and an inspiration to me. She will be missed.

Dear Janet and Family, Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your loved mother-in-law Mrs. Marta Schafer. It was my pleasure to meet Mrs. Schafer and you, Janet and the beautiful granddaughters at Parkwood Mennonite Home when you visited. Whenever I saw you together it reminded me of the Bible story of Ruth and Naomi. Ruth loved her mother-in-law and did her best to take care of her. Janet, you did your utmost to care for Mrs. Schafer. I remember how you styled her hair and took her for a stroll in her wheelchair and you often stopped by my desk to exchange a few happenings. Janet, I will always remember your visits to Parkwood and your graceful love for Marta. “Mrs. Schafer memory is your heritage, a blessing from above.
