Hilda passed away peacefully, with family by her side, at Columbia Forest Long Term Care Centre in Waterloo, on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, in her 98th year.
At age 18, Hilda joined the Canadian Air Force in the Women’s Air Corp and was trained as a cook, stationed in Victoria, B.C. for the duration of the war. When she returned to Kitchener, Hilda fell in love with Isaiah F. Gingrich and they married in 1947. Together, they raised eight children and Hilda supplemented the family income by working as a cook where she was able to enjoy her life-long passion of cooking. Hilda was a wonderful mother. In retirement, Hilda and Isaiah enjoyed traveling.
Hilda was predeceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, Isaiah Frey Gingrich. Loving mother of Allan and his wife Prijna, Ruthanne Bender and her husband Thomas, Richard, Jennifer Eicher and her husband Jerry, Paul, Sandra Graham and her husband Glenn, Theodore, Philip (deceased in 1959), and Susan Ziegler and husband Tim; grandmother of ten grandchildren, Micah (Karen), Tamara (Ian), Shannon (Chris), Megan (Ian), Katie (Louis), Nathan (Sara), Chris, Adam (Phillip), Tonya (Elisio), Cassandra (Shawn), Steven and Lisa; and great-grandmother of 17 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her parents, Clara Stumpf and William Graf; brothers, Clarence, Harvey, Victor, Walter; and sisters, Clara Hohner and Hester Westphal.
The Gingrich family will receive relatives and friends at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Friday, May 13, 2022 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at Trillium Lutheran Church, 22 Willow Street, Waterloo on Saturday, May 14, 2022 from 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. The funeral service to honour and celebrate Hilda’s life will begin at 11:00 a.m. A reception in the church fellowship hall will immediately follow the service. Interment at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo, in the Veterans section beside her beloved husband Isaiah.
