Word cannot describe how I felt when I realized that Norma had passed away while I was gone on vacation. When I returned to work and realized her room was empty I felt such grief! Norma was a special woman and I admired her so much. I know she lived a full life and her final years where challenging to her.
I miss her calling my name and her witty sense of humor!
It was an honour to care for this amazing women and to see the love and dedication her family showed her. She was truly blessed.
My thoughts and prayers are with family and friends as they adjust to life without this central woman.
Sincerely,
Carol Sallasvaara PSW

I am saddened to learn of Norma’s passing. My friendship with Norma began in 1952 when we met at Stratford Normal School . I sat in the desk behind her in class. After graduation we both started our teaching career at the same school,King George in Brantford. We also shared living accommodations in summers as we pursued our university studies at Western. Over the years after , we did see each other on some occasions at the Normal reunions.
I hold many fond happy memories of our friendship.

Sorry to share this "late", but I especially wanted to recognize that Norma was one of the first people that I met in the Cambridge Stroke Recovery community and my first impression of her was that "she was the newsletter" for Cambridge Stroke Recovery Association and super-involved with the group for as long as she was able. We will miss, but never forget you, Norma.

For several summers when I was a student, Norma hired me to help with the activities at Fairview. She would constantly find new ways to engage and support residents. One example is that after she had compiled the Fairview Cookbook she had me individually bring each of the residents that had submitted a recipe to the community kitchen to prepare it together. I'm grateful to have known her in this way, to have witnessed her perseverance and creativity. She was unstoppable. Duane, Lynne and Gayle, you're all in my thoughts.

In 1990, when David was administrator of St. Joseph’s Home, Guelph, I was hired as chaplain. I had the appropriate academic preparation, but little experience specifically with seniors. Norma took me under her wing. She flooded me with books and reports and she also gave me personal support and encouragement. She and David became great trusted friends and mentors. I am forever grateful to both.
