Born in Gluddaus Latvia on March 21, 1929, Karin passed away peacefully at Lanark Heights LTC. Loving sister to Sigrid, Wolter (Edith), Henry (Gisela) and Stephanie, and predeceased by her brother Kurt. She will be remembered dearly by her nieces and nephews: Peter (Joanne), Michelle (Stephen), Erik (Karyn) and Alexander, and Bodo, Alexandra and Caroline and Heikki (Paivi) and Irene.

 

After the war, Karin went to Sweden where she trained as a children’s nurse. She came to Canada in 1955 and after starting as a domestic and moving on as a nursing aid at Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto, she completed grade 13 high school at night. At the strong encouragement of the director of nursing, Karin enrolled in the School of Nursing at the University of Toronto graduating with a BScN in 1961. She went on to complete a Masters of Nursing at University of California, Berkley in 1967. Karin returned to Canada to a teaching position at McMaster University School of Nursing where she was instrumental in developing the problem-based learning approach. After retiring in 1988 Karin joined her extended family and Baltic community in Kitchener-Waterloo. She travelled extensively to Sweden and Germany as a consultant teaching problem-based learning techniques. Karin was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (honora causa) from the University of Linkoping Sweden in 1995. Karin also received the Community of Distinction Award from McMaster University for outstanding scholarship and research in 2006.

 

The von Schilling family would like to thank the staff of Luther Village Sunshine Centre, Lanark Heights LTC, Mt. Zion Lutheran Church and Pat Lavesque, her long-time caregiver.

 

A Celebration of Karin’s Life will be held Saturday June 18, 2022, at 3:00pm at Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 29 Westmount Rd S, Waterloo.
