Very sad to hear the news of Jim's passing. He loved to share stories about his "critters" in the lab and the good old days in Biology. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.

My heart is saddened to learn of Jim's passing. As his supervisor for many years in Biology, we had fantastic talks about his field work and gluten-free baking! My condolences to Jim's wife and children. May angels guide him in.

I will miss Jim tremendously. Jim was always so generous with his time and knowledge. We spent many hours in the field and he was a tremendous help as I began teaching at UW. As a friend and a colleague, Jim made our department a fun and wonderful place to work. I will miss talking to him about fishing, music, cooking and coffee. Jim's name will live on with our students for many years, as they use the specimens and materials he so carefully organized and maintained over a long and storied career, and a life well lived.

Jim was one of the people most important to me in making the UW Biology Department such a great place to work for so many years. He combined great expertise with a lot of humour and kindness. Many of us benefited and will remember him with gratitude and affection.
