While I didn't get the opportunity to spend much time with Shirley, she was always great company when I did. I can tell from the tributes here that many felt the same, and that she is somewhere making others laugh now - pain free and back to her vibrant self.
Dennis and Mom - I am so sorry and we are here for you both - whatever you need. Family and friends will help you get through this, and I know Shirley is thankful for all you've done for her and her little Lizzy over the last year especially. You are both truly very special, and I know Shirley is proud and smiling down on you both.
Lots of Love
Crystal, Trevor and Kayden.

I regret that I am unable to be there in person to pay my respects to Shirley and you her family. It was an honour to be her "personal banker" for so many years. Even after I retired! I can still hear her calling me Honey Bunny and that amazing laugh. She was a little spit fire of a woman with a very colourful vocabulary and so much love to share. She certainly loved her family and was so proud of you all. I was fortunate to have visited her at her home in Florida and to see how much she loved it.I am sure that you have many wonderful memories and stories to share, but also that you will miss her deeply. She was one of a kind!
With much love and respect for your loss. Dawn Wilson

Mom, there are no words that can express how thankful I am for everything that you did for me. You were always my biggest cheer leader at minor hockey and Junior B games and I have your scrap book to prove it. I can still hear that infamous cow bell that you used to ring from the stands. You and I embarked on many road trips down to Florida and we used to have some really good laughing sessions. You would laugh so hard that you would say, "Oh stop it Denny, I am gonna pee".
It was you and me on Bechtel and then Sabrina and I loved our time together. Even cutting grass at the trailer in Puslinch, you, me and Lizzy. We enjoyed beers and laughs together and I will treasure those moments forever.
I am sure your parents were with you when you passed and it makes me incredibly filled with joy. I will continue to love you forever and I will do my best to make you proud.

When I first met Shirley over 15 years ago, I was nervous because so many people told me that nobody was good enough for her Denny. I thought to myself what am I doing? Then Shirl and I met and from the very start, she made it a point to let me know that she accepted me into the family. We shared many good and bad times over the years and I am very thankful for all of the memories which I will hold dear for ever. Dennis and I have fond memories of Shirl and my mom sitting together, drinking wine and sharing their views on men. She gave her all to ensure that her dog Lizzy had the best life possible and we were able to bring Lizzy to the hospital to say goodbye to her mom.
I will never forget the last moments we spent with you in the hospital and when we knew for sure that you had left us.
Shirley, you are going to be missed and what we have to remember is that you are not suffering anymore. It will not make the loss any easier but it will get your family and friends through this.
Heaven has gained another angel. I love you and I promise that I will help Denny get through this.
Big hugs and kisses until we see each other again.

My deepest condolences to the Smallwood family. My best memories of Shirley (or Mrs Smallwood as we called her back in the 70’s)….was the 70’s on Highpark Ave. I recall being excited to be invited for a swim in their pool. Shirley would be in her blue floating lounge chair with her beverage saying no splashing or your out! She would get her hair done on Thursdays and she couldn’t get it wet. Our families did lots together back then. Even her dog Corey played with our cat Patches and they were good friends. I will miss her out of the blue phone calls the last couple of years when I was at work. Just to chat. I will always have a special place in my heart for her. Sending my love, hugs and prayers to the family especially to Deb,Dave and Dennis. She was one special lady who was loved by many ❤️
