Obituary of Professor Julius Bajcsy, Emeritus

After a very full and interesting life, Julius passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s General Hospital, Kitchener on Monday February 13, 2023, at the age of 92.

He is survived by his wife Viera to whom he was a beloved husband for 52 years. After several years of living in Montreal near their son Jan, they moved to Waterloo in 2017 to be close to their youngest son Michal. Julius loved traveling, long walks, and playing with his grandchildren.

Julius was born in Slovakia in 1930 to Anton and Maria Bajcsy as the oldest of their three children. He fondly remembered growing up on a flour mill operated by his father in Stupava and attending St. Fancis Gymnasium in Malacky. After completing his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1953, he started his long career at Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, which included the positions of Associate Dean and the chair of the Department of Measurement. He partially retired as a Professor in 2000 and was awarded the title Professor Emeritus in 2004.

Julius published seven text books, 25 university course books, 60 scientific papers, and 126 popular science articles and was granted eight patents. He received numerous awards for his research, teaching, and mentoring, as well as for his contributions to the development of science, education, and measurement technologies and standards in Slovakia, including the Great Medal of St. Gorazd awarded to him by the Slovak Ministry of Education in 2005.

Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., on Friday, February 17, 2023 from 1 – 1:30 p.m. The funeral service will follow in the chapel of the funeral home on Friday at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Ed Bastian officiating. Interment at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.
