Miss Swartz was my teacher in 1st and 3rd grade at Winston Churchill. I learned to actually think about my learning in those years with her, but beyond that I felt genuinely cared for by her. Even though it has been over 40 years since I was in her class, I have great memories from those years -- including getting caught cheating, admitting to a playground fight, sharing my "Number Rings" game with the class, and I am still wondering what was in the jewelry sized box that rattled when she shook it for the vocabulary word: "something". I visited her about 10 years ago and asked her about that little box, but, much to my disappointment, she did not remember such a box.
