Obituary of Marcy Shiry

Marcy Shiry

June 17, 1934 - June 13, 2023

Honestly, you just couldn't meet a woman more wonderful than Mom.

She was kind.

To her core.

She was the kind of person you wanted to be around, and she made space in her life and home for every person, and animal, who needed it. And once you got to know her, Mom loved to chat. Prattle, as Dad would tease. But it was her ability to listen, to sit with you, open hearted, and really hear you … that’s what made Mom special. And she was grateful, so grateful, for the good things life brought her way, and accepting when it threw her some curve balls. She loved baseball, Murdoch Mysteries, scratch tickets, and going to Florida with Dad.

Marcelene Gloria Shiry passed away on June 13, 2023, just four days short of her 89th birthday. She was Marcy, Mom, Nana, and Queen. Oh Queenie, we miss you so much! We miss playing Rumikub, laughing about your giant hostas, eating your Christmas cookies and lasagna, and listening to Glen Campbell. We remember knitted slippers, pineapple squares, and how much you loved your cat, Penny.

Mom worked most of her life; as a young woman at Silverwoods, and at The Dairy and at Shirley’s as an adult. She had good, lifelong friends like Aunt Ruby, and Aunt Renate. But her heart was at home with Dad and the three of us. And when it came time for us to start our own families, she welcomed that with open arms. And her grandchildren, and great grandchildren, well she would say all 11 were “marvellous”.

Mom made the best of everything because she was an optimist. And not just when it was easy. She was optimistic when it took dedication and tenacity and commitment. She was bravely, sweetly, unapologetically positive in a way that, at times, defied logic. But that was Mom. Likely because she was a woman of faith. Sure, in God. But also, in all of us. Mom saw the good in herself, and in the people she loved. You can’t really ask for any more than that.

With her gone now sometimes the sadness makes it hard to breathe. But Mom wouldn't have wanted it that way. She would have said, "Ah Honey, it's ok." And when we can make space for the good in all of this, we can just imagine how over the moon Dad is to be with Mom again. Right where they both belong.

Peace, Queen.

Love Always,

Brenda, Tim, Bobby, Ang, Deb, Dan, Brooklyn, Satchel, Kristin, Cooper, Jackson, Charlotte, Hazel, Bryn, Dylan, Jazz, and Wes.

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
And I always will remember
In a world without end

She goes on
She goes on

She goes on

She Goes On, Crowded House
