Obituary of James Glen Machan
After a very full life lived with a grateful heart, Glen passed away peacefully on the first day of summer, June 21, 2023 at the age of 95. The last remaining of 10 children born on February 29, 1928 (leap year) to Annie and Stewart Machan in Antler, Saskatchewan. Predeceased by his first wife of 23 years Grace (Taylor) (1977). Together they had much loved daughters Janice (Andy van der Velden) Willwerth and Dr. Carolyn (Don Rudolph) Machan. Always a present, passionate and proud grandfather to Emily (Paul), Alexander (deceased), Isaac and Owen Rudolph.
He was married to his second wife Claire (Dickson/Emery) for 45 years and together they embarked on a life of community involvement, extensive travel and a very busy social schedule that rivalled people much younger. Caring step-father to Christine (Jamie Coatsworth) Gillespie, John Emery (deceased) and George Emery. Loving step-grandfather to Peter, Matthew, Joesph, Frank, Georgia, Meredith, Jack and Scarlet. Family was the cornerstone of his life and he adored his many nieces and nephews.
He was a creative and kind multi-faceted man with an eye for fashion. A successful businessman, avid Toronto Blue Jays fan, Symphony and Art Gallery supporter, mall-walker (always in hyper speed), gracious host (his liqueur tray was legendary), crossword solver, handyman (he taught Carolyn to make doll furniture), curler, golfer, bread maker and genealogist (these are just a few of his interests). After family, his biggest passion was service to the community. A Paul Harris Fellow, founding member of PROBUS, president of the Kitchener Westmount Rotary Club, recipient of several volunteer service awards (20 years for KidsAbility being one), driver for Meals on Wheels, Family and Children Services and patients going through cancer treatment. He valued his connection to and involvement in Parkminster Church. He led by example — we often wondered when he slept.
We will miss his smile and thank the Johnston Floor at University Gates for the love and sweet care they provided over the last 6 months to a man who meant so much to us.
